Item Description...
In her most transcendent novel to date, RITA Award--winning author Deborah Raney depicts a driven, ambitious man shaken into a journey of self-discovery by the death of his son. As "Dr. Botox" to the bored rich women of Chicago, plastic surgeon Max Jordan was shocked by the decision of his son, Joshua, to focus his medical talent on Haitian orphans. Embittered by Joshua's death, Max searched for resolution in the very place his son called home. The selfless labor of Joshua's co-workers stunned Max, and he was particularly taken by American volunteer Valerie Ausin, whose view of his son's sacrifice, and her own, challenged Max's values and assumptions. Transformed by his visit to Haiti, and especially by his encounters with Valerie, Max wondered if he could ever return to his "Max-a-Million" lifestyle, or if the doors to his gilded cage had finally opened.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A well written book that is enjoyable all the way through  Jul 17, 2006
The only thing I didn't like about it is that it ended.
I didn't want to let these characters go. It was a wonderful read full of depth and struggles but with hope that inspires me to do more with my life.
I hope there will be more books with these characters because I LOVED this book!
Enjoyable, ok Christian romance  Jul 12, 2006
Over the Waters by Deborah Raney is the story of Dr. Max Jordan and Valerie Austin as they each struggle to find their way while working at an orphanage in Haiti. Much of the story is a romance, but Raney handles it in a way so that the couple's relationship is really secondary to the rest of the plot and characters. Dr. Jordan's son, Joshua, died in Haiti a year ago while working at an orphanage, so Max travels in his son's footsteps trying to find the same peace Joshua had found. Valerie is recovering from a broken engagement and uses the opportunity to focus on someone other than herself. Max's change of heart comes about rather abruptly, and the backstory of the Greene's seems a bit stretched, but overall the plot flows well and is enjoyable to read. It's an ok book. Don't rush out and buy it, but if you find it on the library shelf, bring it home for a good read.
Great Beach Read  Jun 19, 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Some of it was predictable but I don't care - I hoped it would end the way it did and was not the least bit disappointed. I read it in one day while on vacation and then moved on to one of her other books, "Playing by Heart."

Deb Raney is a great author.
Over the Water  Apr 27, 2006
Predictable; cliche; little or no sentence length variation; a total bore that had me curling my lip at each page - sorry. This book was NOT, in my opinion, good by any stretch of the imagination.
She's sooooo sneaky  Jan 25, 2006
A wealthy cosmetic surgeon, Max, trying to find answers regarading the last days of his son's life, and a woman, Valerie, searching for meaning in her own, find both in an unlikely place.

Once again, Deborah Raney sneaks these well-drawn characters into our hearts. In addition to Max and Valerie, we see people who have dedicated their lives to helping others in desparate situations. Who have sacrified much to gain much, and whose spirits touch ours simply by sharing this earth with them. OVER THE WATERS is an uplifting and eye-opening read (Botox puns not intended), and one well worth your time.
