Overview
In Out of the Box: Building Robots, Transforming Lives, Andrew Williams tells his story of overcoming life?s odds to build robots and impact the lives of six bright and adventurous African American females.

Tracing the steps of his journey, Williams takes us from the Kansas ghetto in which he was raised and where he was for all intents and purposes, written off by society?s standards, to Osaka Japan, where he led the first all-female team from Spelman College - the Spelbots, to the stage of the RoboCup Tournament.

Compelled by tough love, commitment and the prayers of faithful men and women whom God placed in his life along the way; driven by his belief that God has called him to uplift and encourage African American youth Dr. Andrew Williams shows that with God, seemingly impossible dreams become possible.

In this biography he challenges the reader through his own faith story to find and pursue their unique calling, even when it does not make sense.

Gift for my grandson  Sep 10, 2009
I gave this book to my grandson as a gift without reading it myself. He has told me it has been an interesting and thought-provoking book.

Deeply personal and inspiring!  Sep 4, 2009
For someone trying to find her own purposeful path in life, this book was a beautiful glimpse into how Dr. Williams is doing just that. It's a deeply personal account about learning to listen to yourself and trust your faith. I appreciate Dr. Williams' courage in sharing his story.

Out of the Box -- a book well worth reading...  Apr 20, 2009
Out of the Box: Building Robots, Transforming Lives by Dr. Andrew Williams is a very good book. It is a call for all students, parents, teachers to understand and grasp that, as his favorite quote says "Success is never final. Failure is seldom fatal. But it's Courage that counts." - Winston Churchill. Dr. Williams takes you through the journey of his life and shows how no matter your pedigree, race, sex, or your past that with God and hard work amazing things can happen.

You also get to learn about and follow the beginnings and the growth of the first All Female Robocup team - the Spelbots of Spellman College as the travel to Japan to compete. Do they win? Yes and no... you will just have to read to find out.

I had first heard about this book on Moody Radio and thought it might be interesting to read. I am glad I did. And I recommend to anyone else kids, adults, and whoever else might be looking at this book.

What it takes for minorities to succeed in science and engineering  Feb 25, 2009
If you work in the field of science and technology, and are concerned about encouraging minorities to participate (as you should be :-), you need to read this book. Andrew Williams provides a moving first-person account of his journey from a literal cardboard box to becoming one of the leading robotics educators in the United States. Along the way, he deals with peer pressure, spiritual crises, and social prejudice -- which he overcomes through family support, encouraging mentors, and his deep personal faith. His life truly embodies his favorite Winston Churchill quote: Success is never final, failure is never fatal, but it is courage that counts!

New faces in American robotics  Feb 14, 2009
Andrew Williams is one of the nation's leading advocates for African American participation in robotics research. The ARTSI Alliance, which he founded, has grown into a consortium of a dozen historically black colleges and seven major research universities that provide mentoring and role models to encourage African American students to pursue careers in computer science. The Alliance supports an active community of robotics researchers, and by making their work more visible, is changing the public's perception of who does robotics.

Out of the Box is a very personal account of Williams' maturation, professional growth, and deep religious faith. It reminds us that technologists are, first of all, human beings -- at least for now. Readers of this book will be inspired by his success, and encouraged by his vision.
