Item Description...
Jack Thompson eats giants for breakfast. Just ask media giant and shock-jock Howard Stern, who ranted on air about the "one lunatic lawyer" who got him kicked off the air. Jack, an outraged father and activist lawyer, is on a mission to protect children from the violent and obscene video games, music lyrics, shock jock radio shows, and television programs he says are creating a culture of violence and degradation. Going beyond outrage, Thompson chronicles his own spiritual journey from bystander to activist and offers the sociological, medical, scientific, and legal evidence that will motivate all Americans--especially parents--to get involved.

A graduate of Vanderbilt law school, Attorney Jack Thompson was a successful personal injury lawyer when he was first involved in the fight against indecency in the entertainment industry. Despite death threats and public ridicule, he has spent the last seventeen years of his career battling violence and obscenity in media and video games. Thompson filed the compliant to the FCC that resulted in a sizable fine against Howard Stern and motivated Clear Channel Broadcasting to drop the shock jock. Frequently called upon as an expert commentator on indecency in entertainment, he has been interviewed numerous times by such outlets as The Today Show, 60 Minutes, the BBC, Fox, and many others. He serves as a Presbyterian elder in his church and lives in Florida with his wife and son.

Jack Thompson was born in 1951.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Worthless.  Feb 20, 2008
In the first chapter of the book, actually the first three paragraphs, Jack Thompson blatantly revels in his years of effort ending in Howard Stern being removed from the public airwaves, boasting about how the FCC gave Stern a huge fine, and then he even insults the guy. That is content of the first page and a half of the book, chapter one. What a lovely book.

This guy should be sued for slander, and not just because of Howard Stern. He twists facts, stories, he lies, and shirks or ignores dissections of his works that prove his every point as false. For proof, listen to him when he appears on the news, then google his name and read any one of the many dissections or intelligent reviews of his pointed flatulences. Be one of the few people who actually thinks about what they hear or read, rather than blindly accepts whatever the media presents to them. Google him, and read. Seriously.

Let me get back to the subject. Not only is this book a continuation of the man's degraded, unsound psyche, it is also a cacophony of lies and boasts, elevating himself as a holy crusader fighting for God's will, and slandering his opponents as, essentially, the work of the Devil. An example of such: saying that violent video games are a primary source of violence among children, which is an absolute. There are more factors contributing to every burst of violence than just one issue, especially when that issue is a one-size-fits-all reason for violence. That just doesn't make sense.

This book, no, the author of this book does not research his topic, yet rants for over two hundred pages about it, citing unrelated subjects, and using every possible way to arouse an emotional response in his readers, few that they may be, into accepting his twisted version of reality. God, history, religion, seemingly anything he can reach for.

If any of you have read Atlas Shrugged (author: Ayn Rand), this person is a moocher through and through. He disbelieves the world as it is, instead replacing it with his own distorted version, then endeavors to convince others to accept his version of the universe, using blackmail and fear to keep them under his power. This is the only way a moocher ever gains power: by the willing submission of their victims.

While that may sound quite nasty, the truth is there: research it for yourself, and you'll find that my opinion is quite correct.

Let me close by paraphrasing something I read some time ago in an article denouncing yet another bloated-head fanatic who swore guns are the source of violence. (I cannot remember the author of that particular article)

It couldn't be that many children grow up in broken homes.
It couldn't be that many children have alcoholics or drug addicts for parents.
It couldn't be that our public school system is the laughing stock of the civilized world.
It couldn't be that the media publicizes and exaggerates many of the most violent stories it can find.
It couldn't be that society seems to shun good news, and revel in the bad.
It couldn't be that society would rather see a violent movie than a comedy, and so the movie industry caters more toward that audience.
It couldn't be that alcohol and drugs are far easier to get than help.
It couldn't be that our streets are filled with gangs.
It couldn't be any of that. No, it must be the violent video games. They are to blame.

This review describes my opinions of the book and its author; take from it what you will, and research everything on your own, and form your own opinion. (Do not blindly believe what others say without knowing for yourself.)

A terrible book by a disgusting man  Feb 17, 2008
I just recently read this book. I used it as evidence in my dissertation for my psychology class. Specifically, I used it as my counter-argument. His arguments make absolutely no sense. Video games do not cause violence. He practically claims that violence was non-existent before violent video games. Guess what. I play violent shooting games almost every day. Guess how many people I've killed. None. One of the worst school shootings of all time, University of Texas in 1996, happened 6 years before pong was created. to make matters worse, Thompson capitalizes from tragedies. Every time there is a school shooting, he gets on the news and talks about his damn book. He is a disgusting, vile man that should be silenced.
In two word, Literary Diarrhea  Nov 13, 2007
The reviewers that precede me have accurately summed up this 'book' for what it is: self-important, literary garbage, and I am shocked that the transcript was even submitted for publication. Essentially, the book follows Jack Thompson's trek through his anti-first amendment 'crusade' (as he calls it) and invokes more religious quotes here than the Pope himself. Hypocrisy is omnipresent in this book, particularly since Thompson describes himself as an ideological libertarian, he has been the poster-child for censorship and increased government intervention into citizens' life, (of course, he claims that this is in the name of God). If you can get through all of his self-indulgent banter, then I'm sure you will find this book mildly entertaining, (albeit unintentionally).

I bought it used in an attempt to give me some insight into research that I am currently focusing on that deals with violent media and legislation which seeks to curtail the diffusion of such media. Since Thompson is a key figure in this debate, (or at least claims to be), I thought it would be worth a read. I was mistaken.

Both the writing and editing are poor, and I have seen better technique from undergraduates that I graded when I used to be a teaching assistant. I mean, this man has a J.D., but you wouldn't know it from reading this book.

The one positive aspect to come from this book was that I am probably going to attend law school when I am finished with graduate school, as I figure if this guy can make it through law school, then anybody can. Well, that's not entirely true, but you get the point.
Toilet Paper  Apr 12, 2007
Yep, that's what this book is. Who is really going to believe this hypocrisy this hack writer has to say? This is all biased, opinionated, and easily debatable subject matter. Are certain video games really that bad for your children? It's not like your children will live a life completely devoid of profanity.

Well, congratulations Jack Thompson. You just made yourself look like a fool. You're even worse than Ann Coulter, and that's rather sad.
Pathetic  Dec 24, 2006
What Jack is doing here is using the most pathetic techniques to make people believe his inaccurate views. He uses religion, lies, and other shameless techniques. He claims the game Killer7 has pornographic material in it, I myself have the game and I love it, it has no such thing. I do applaud him however for his effort. But this is a new age, like it or not, video games are becoming incredibly huge. We can't try to convince people to stop playing them, it's already too late for that. All in all, don't buy this book. Your money is better of going to other good books. On a side note, I do find it funny he put a quote of someone being angry at him on the cover. Guess he must have been desperate.
