Item Description...
Sixteenth century England. The Protestant Reformation sweeps across Europe into England, bringing political and religious upheaval, and danger to all who embrace this new learning. Into this tumultuous period, young Anne Askew, a gentlewoman from Lincolnshire, forges her way into history. From the peasant revolt in northern England, which threatens the lives of her beloved father and brothers, through a loveless marriage, and finally to the political intrigues of the court of Henry VIII, Anne's courageous and steadfast faith sustains her. But when her life is threatened, can Anne's faith hold true? Here is the true story of a young English woman who faced adversity and affliction with the strong belief that Christ is indeed sufficient in all circumstances, and no matter what the cost, the truth of Christ must prevail.

Sad but Good Story  Jul 23, 2008
In truth, I realized "Only Glory Awaits" was mainly geared towards women, but it was the only novel I could find on the interesting early Protestant martyr Anne Askew. I wasn't disappointed. Nuernberg executes the characterization and plot well as readers follow Anne through a peasent revolt, a terrible marriage, her trial, and ultimately her finding glory. I must say that some of the more violent scenes such as the torture and final execution were tastefully done and managed to create emotion without going over-the-top. Likewise, the more simple aspects of the character's life were well written as well. Just over a month ago, I was in London and saw some of the sights featured in the novel such as the Tower (though unfortunantly I didn't go in) and Smithfield (I didn't notice that much in the part of Smithfield I was in, but the knowledge of what took place around there made me glad I took the time to walk/jog there). Overall, a sad but very good story of Christian sacrifice and overcoming the odds. I do have one question though. It was my understanding that Anne had children, but they aren't mentioned in the story. Someone please tell me if they know why.
Hopefully, Nuernberg will have future success with historical fiction. If she plans to write further on martyrs, I hope she considers some of the Marian Martyrs such as Rowland Taylor, Cicely Ormes, or perhaps even married couples such as James and Margery Austoo or Edmund and Katherine Allin. As less is known about most of these people besides Taylor, there would be plenty of room for author's imagination. Anyway though, the book on Akew was enjoyable, sad, and potentially inspiring. I recommend it to anyone interested in early Protestant martyrs or emotional historical fiction.
A Great Book  Dec 22, 2005
An outstanding read. I did not expect this book to grab my attention and hold it to the very end. I would highly recommend it to all readers. I can not wait until Ms Nuernberg provides us with another historical novel. I really have a new appreciation for men and women who were able to be steadfast in their faith regardless of the opposition.
Christian Book Previews  Jul 22, 2004
In Only Glory Awaits, Leslie S. Nuernberg presents independent, young Anne Askew, a noblewoman educated far beyond most ladies in sixteenth-century England. When she receives Christ, she openly embraces Reformist doctrines, shocking her more conservative father and stepmother. But Anne?s newfound faith comforts her when a peasant revolt threatens her father?s and brothers? lives.

After the clamor dies down, Anne begins to witness to family members, servants, and peasants in the surrounding countryside. Her straightforward presentation of Scripture and excellent debate skills create tension within the Askew home, especially with her stepmother. But Anne?s tenacity and an unforeseen tragedy will propel her life into danger.

While the historical detail in this novel is impressive, the prose is stilted and awkward throughout. The enigmatic main character shows herself as both a pious saint and a liberated feminist, an unusual mix for the 1500s. Omnipresent point of view distances readers from the story, and the somewhat flat characters fail to pull readers back in. The plotline carries the required rising action, but events become merely history as Anne makes decisions that will determine her future. Recommended to those interested in Reformation martyrs and who would like a story slightly less dry than history books. --Katie Hart, Christian Book
This is a question  Nov 7, 2003
This is a question, not a review. Where are the two reviews that were previously written? I wrote one of them that had been posted here, but I see now that it's gone, and that someone else can be "the first to write a review on this book." So...what happened?
An inspiration that can only make you a better person  Sep 19, 2003
I began this book as just another "bed time" read ... how so wrong I was. ONLY GLORY AWAITS is so much more than a historical novel. Ms Nuernberg makes you feel and live the experience. With her impeccable research, Ms Nuernberg relays to us aspects of the times on Christianity that I, for one, have not felt that passionate about for a long time. I found I started challenging myself on how I approach every day. Could I take a stand like that? I don't think that there are alot of us today that could stand up to the trials that Anne Askew survived. Wouldn't it be nice if the passion that we put into earning money, playing or working could be put into something that inspired people to believe in God and the good that is around us. Thank you Ms Nuernberg for the story of Anne Askew and the motivation to better myself.
