Item Description...
A small church. A new pastor. An old murder.
Andy Fitzsimmons, fresh out of seminary, arrives in Pottersfield, Oklahoma, as the new Pastor of a small Baptist church. Then he hears a rumor that one of his White church members murdered a Black man on church property thirty years earlier. The excitement of uncovering the truth spurs him to take chances and dig into the past. When Andy does uncover the truth, he finds his own past uncovered as well.
"On the Banks of the Jordan is a powerful story of a young pastor's search for truth and justice in a small Oklahoma town. In investigating a nearly thirty-year-old murder, the pastor, Andy Fitzsimmons, agitates church leaders, places himself in danger, and drives his wife away. Beneath the surface of this mystery is a reminder that churches and Christians often struggle with hatred, bigotry, and judgmental attitudes. On the Banks of the Jordan offers a significant lesson about how to live as an authentic Christian in narrow-minded and sometimes hostile settings."
- Pamela Durso, associate executive director, Baptist History and Heritage Society, Atlanta, Georgia, and author of The Story of Baptists in the United States
"I was captivated, intrigued, and challenged as I read this book. It felt like the results of combining Dan Brown with Frank Peretti This mystery was a page-turner with a spiritual edge "
- Eric Bryant, Navigator at Mosaic in Los Angeles, and author of Peppermint-Filled Pinatas: Breaking Through Tolerance and Embracing Love (

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Paradoxical Novel  Jul 28, 2009
The author nails a prevalent paradox head-on: Why does an individual, who burns with righteous indignation towards intolerance, racism, legalism, or un-gracism (my word!), himself usually become intolerant, racist, legalistic, or devoid of grace?

A riveting, make-you-think novel that all pastors, politicians, and concerned citizens should read.
Novel demands more from its readers  Oct 23, 2008
Finally, a novel that demands more from the reader! This is a deep book, and I will need to read it again to catch more of the symbolism that is there. Fortunately, there is a final chapter (epilogue) that can be used like a book club discussion guide. That's where you can find where the author gets some of his (her?) allusions and symbolism to history, culture, and bible. One example: a lot of music references are mentioned. If you know the lyrics of those songs, it sometimes tells you what to expect or what is really going on in the background.

Author's writing style reminds me of John Irving, but the book is very deep. This would be good for discussion groups/book clubs, etc.
Well done, multi-layered Mystery  Oct 10, 2008
A well thought through novel, with focused characterization which prompts one to think deeply. Though not an overnight read, this novel is hard to put down. On the Banks includes several allusions to other books, historical situations, and biblical references, which combined with interesting characters and American culture, produces a multi-layered and very satisfying read.

As far as I know this is the first book by this author - and I would be very interested in reading whatever he is planning to bring out next.
