Overview
When I am lonely you are near, When I am angry, you stay here. High in heaven bright, you greet me, Down in darkness, too, you meet me. The bright morning light greets four children as they step into a day of joyful activity: climbing a tree, swimming through clear water, toasting marshmallows at twilight. And when they feel lost or lonely, friends are never very far away. In this gentle adaptation of Psalm 139, Reeve Lindbergh and Holly Meade create a prayer of abiding love and hope - and a sun-dappled world where comfort is around every corner, and no one is truly alone. A favorite psalm becomes wonderfully accessible to children in this comforting new book from a Caldecott Honor artist and the editor of IN EVERY TINY GRAIN OF SAND.

When I am lonely you are near,
When I am angry, you stay here.
High in heaven bright, you greet me,
Down in darkness, too, you meet me.

Reeve Lindbergh, the daughter of aviator Charles Lindbergh and poet Anne Morrow Lindbergh, is the editor of numerous books for children, including IN EVERY TINY GRAIN OF SAND, and the author of THE CIRCLE OF DAYS, as well as several books for adult readers. She says of ON MORNING WINGS, "Psalm 139 was one of my parents' favorites, and as I read it over and over again I realized that it conveys the sense that we're all held in the embrace of God and the universe. I wanted to emphasize the universality of the spirit in this book."

Holly Meade is the author and illustrator of A PLACE TO SLEEP, and has illustrated many acclaimed books for children, including HUSH! A THAI LULLABY by Minfong Ho, which was a Caldecott Honor Book. In order to capture the spirit of this adaptation of Psalm 139, Holly Meade drew on the sense of wonder she felt as a child when in the presence of something bigger and grander than herself.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Love this Book -- A Family Favorite  Feb 21, 2008
This book has been a family favorite since we brought it home from the bookstore last year. My 3 year old son really enjoys it, and I expect it to stay a favorite for years to come. The book captures the themes of the Psalm (rather than its text) and is moving for anyone who strives for a relationship with God, regardless of religion. We are Baha'is and it works perfectly for us. Lindbergh's verse is lyrical and literate, and Meade's charming illustrations of a multi-racial group of friends spending their day together provide context for the sometimes abstract ideas of God's ever-present companionship and love. Really great book.

Sweet and uplifting  Apr 15, 2007
Reeve Lindbergh has done a fabulous job here. She takes a Psalm and rewords it for children -- but it's great for adults, too! The message is simple and encouraging -- God is always there, in good times and bad, caring for each one of us. This book acts as a prayer, acknowledging that. I run a church bookstore, and everyone who takes a look at this book falls in love with it.

Appealing adaptation of Psalm 139  Mar 25, 2006
Finding nice Bible picture books is not easy. Although the text in Lindbergh's book is greatly altered from the King James translation, the book is a useful introduction to the ideas in Psalm 139. I find it uplifting and pleasing.
The book makes a lovely gift.
