Item Description...
From the very beginning of Christianity, Jesus' followers have tried to legitimize their views of him with the help of the Scriptures. This means that if we wish to understand the beginning of the Christian church and of Christian theology, we have to examine the early Christian use of the Old Testament. quoting from them. Eleven OT quotations in the Fourth Gospel are the topic of this study. These eleven quotations (in fact the majority of John's OT quotations) differ from the known versions of the OT, but are not free paraphrases of the OT text, in some cases, it is not immediately clear from which passage precisely the evangelist quotes. This state of affairs raises the questions which OT passages in which versions John used and how and why the quotations were modified. redaction are dealt with in their interrelationship. Can we adequately explain the form of a quotation by taking into account Johannine redaction of an OT passage in a textual form which we know which we can reasonably argue ? Results of research in the field of early Jewish and early Christian exegetical techniques and devices are of course taken into account. Each of the eleven quotations is scrutinized on the points of source and redaction. It appears that John mostly used the LXX, but that where that translation did not suit his purposes, he either translated the Hebrew himself or used an other translation. He modified the quotations in agreement with extant exegetical rules, and for christological reasons. This study gives new insight into an aspect of the early Christian use of Scripture (Peeters 1996)

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Either a quotation or an allusion  Jul 3, 2006
Menken's Old Testament Quotations in the Fourth Gospel: Studies in Textual Form was so invaluable to my M.A. thesis on the textual form of the OT source of Rev 21.3c that I copied his methodology with some few changes.

Menken compares an NT text with the relevant OT passages in order to determine the most likely source of the reference. Then, he discusses the reference's meaning in its context, and, finally, he addresses whether the reference's interpretation is applicable to its "supposed source." In this way, Menken establishes the textual form and version of an OT text in the NT.

In contrast with many OT-NT scholars today, Menken avoids the overabundance of categories put forward by men like Beale and Fekkes and tightly defines the parameters for the NT's use of the OT. For instance, Menken explains a quotation thus: "a clause (or series of clauses) from Israel's Scripture that is (or are) rendered verbatim (or anyhow recognizably) in the NT and that is (or are)marked as such by an introducing or concluding formula." Anything that does not meet this standard, Menken terms allusions. It's that plain and simple. Thus, all the 'echoes' and other terminology introduced by scholars examining the OT in the NT are revealed for what they are, absurd and unnecessary. Either one has a quotation or an allusion, end of text, end of story.

This book is an excellent addition to the library of any scholar who is seeking to research the OT in the NT.
