Reviews - What do our customers think?
are you ready to rethink what you're doing?  Mar 16, 2007
i was interested in this book because of having heard the author speak before in various settings. what kept me reading past the first pages was the same "examine-your-life" thought provoking challenges intermixed with down-to-earth witty humor that i was used to in his speaking.

what struck me most as an "X'er" associate pastor of a small town local church in the midst of change was something that wasn't explicitly stated in the book. the idea: "am i promoting 'churchianity' more than "Christianity". the book also gave me a fresh perspective on examining who i am, my motives for being in ministry, and the authenticity of my personal faith.

i did find that portions of the book seemed to be written by two "different earls". on one hand, there's the coffee drinkin, blog writing, 'hip' earl that purposely hangs out with "X'ers" and can be found at the Mudhouse. this part of the book is easy to read, filled with witty humor, and real life stories of people practicing what he's trying to convey.

on the other hand, there's the 'card carrying Boomer', seminary teaching, ministry experienced earl that has to purposely hang out with "X'ers" instead of fitting in naturally and can instead be found at "panera bread". these parts of the book were very deep and insightful; but also 'heady', required more focused reading, and seemed to contain concepts written more towards people in ministry than the average Christian.

that part may be more a fault of my own than one of the book. i approached the book as if it 'remixed version' of the 'on road' disciplines i had grown up learning. to me the'on road' disciplines (bible reading, prayer, journaling, simplicity, etc., etc.) were written more towards Christians in general (newly converted or not) as a means of deepening their personal Christian walk. these 'off road' disciplines seem written more for ministry leaders as a challenge to rethink the motives and methods of ministering, both personally and as the 'Church', to people in today's culture.

in fact the whole book, seemed to be written more specifically to ministry leaders in the "Boomer" generation (which is logical since those would be the author's peers). as a just recently 'turned 30' year old, i enjoyed a lot of the material and was personally challenged as i mentioned before. but i just didn't feel he was writing to me specifically, it was more for an older generation to hear, "no one else is coming, so get ready to pass the baton!" (ch. 11)

so all in all would i recommend the book?? an emphatic "YES!" not just for "boomer" ministry leaders, but for any believer (we're all called to be a ministers) wanting to be more effective, purposeful, and authentic in their ministry efforts.

so go grab yourself a copy, read it with a teachable heart, and then go hang out with some of "the sought"!

A Must Read  Mar 9, 2007
Earl Creps is a much needed voice for the christian faith in todays society. I love Creps' combination of truth mixed with humor. I feel as if he has been inside of my head while he was writing the book. Many of the thougths and issues that he addresses in the book are the very things that I have wrestled with, and continue to wrestle with. A must read for any person that is seeking to explore more of what God has in store for their lives, and the potential for missional living that is for us as followers of Jesus. Thank you Earl for writing this book.

A book that is geared towards boomers, but will impact all generations  Mar 6, 2007
Off-Road discipleship has become one of my new favorites penned by a contemporary author, and I would dare say that Dr. Creps is on the forefront of the church "revolution", so to speak. However, what he addresses in "Off road" is not how to make your service seeker-friendly, or whether the worship band should play U2 or David Crowder - rather, he cuts to the heart of the matter and addresses what the true revolution should be, that is to return to the Jesus model of discipleship. I was not a Christian until college (and in fact, one of my "milestones" was attending a conference in which Dr. Creps spoke at), and I grew up spiritually in a discipleship-based ministry. It was easy for that to occur and thrive because I was in college, and had little real responsibility outside of turning in homework and attending class - the building of community and accountability came easily. However, when you throw in a mortgage, kids, and a full-time job, the discipleship method is more difficult to achieve. However, as Dr. Creps outlines in his book, it is not only possible, but would strengthen Christians' walks with God immeasurably if more churches would follow it.

This book is aimed at baby-boomers, but it will benefit anyone that is old enough to truly grasp what Christ has called us to do on this earth - that includes college students, twentysomethings, retirees - and is struggling with how make true discipleship happen. As someone that has a decent library of books, I can say, if you are going to buy one book this year, let it be Off-Road Discipleship - it will motivate you to walk closer with Christ and point you to other great resources as well.

Off-roading  Feb 27, 2007
Growing up in Arkansas, I experienced the excitement of off-roading for fun. It was always an adventure, and though the direction could be planned, sometimes the results could not. Those moments though proved to never be boring.

Earl's book challenges leaders and essentially all believers to develop disciplines into their personal lives that may seem somewhat un-normal. These disciplines are unnatural and sometimes require sacrificing pride and knowledge. But it is the practice of these disciplines that produce missional leaders who live with a purpose in mind.

Missional leaders always find a way to connect with culture, and in doing so help to connect the culture in which they live to Christ.

Earl's challenge on a believer's friendships is timely for the church. Those we surround ourselves with on a consistent basis help to shape our focus of to whom we should minister. And perhaps our busy schedules prevent us from building relationships that might connect someone with Christ.

Off-Road Disciplines is truly a book that penetrates the paradigm of the reader and demands an inner evaluation of life philosophy and practice. Articulately writing from experience and study, Earl Creps has produced a book well worth the time of any reader. The adventures of off-roading are unpredictable, but always prove to be an experience worthwhile.

A Lifesaver for the church  Feb 27, 2007
Excellent book that could save the church from sinking into irrelevance and ineffectiveness. It is a must read for anyone seeking effective ministry in 2007 and beyond. I wish every leader I know would read this one!
