More About Vicki Hinze
Vicki Hinze When I learned to read, my dad began a "game" with me. I'd read the front page of the newspaper every day and we'd discuss what I'd read at dinner. If I didn't miss a day all week, then I could read the Marmaduke cartoon in the Sunday edition of the newspaper. I didn't know then that this game and those discussions were the very beginning of my training to be a writer. But it was. In retrospect, that seems so clear. I struggled and struggled with what to be when I grew up. The reason wasn't a lack of interest in anything, it was a deep interest in almost everything--and everyone. More hints that writing was in my future--that interest in a wide variety of things and people. Looking back, for fun, my mother and I would read from encyclopedias. Sounds strange, doesn't it? But it wasn't. It was wonderful. We read a lot about people and history and far away places. More training. I began writing political essays at my dad's request, and then moved into poetry (my mother's influence) and many years and a couple careers later, turned to short stories. I enjoyed it but I needed more space to sprawl--a book. In a book, I could explore and have grander adventures. I took the scenic route to get there, but marriage and three children later, I wrote my first novel. It was the worst possible time to begin a new venture. My husband was in special operations, and headquarters had moved from Illinois to Florida. I stayed behind to get the kids through the school year and sell the house. I was working in the corporate world then--a director of operations. Between keeping the house ready for showing, three kids involved in all manner of extra activities and an absentee spouse and full-time job, I had no spare time. But I felt driven to write. So I got up earlier and went to bed later and in months produced my first book. It would be six years of writing and learning and studying before I had a book published. It never occurred to me to give up. I'd finally found my career. It fascinated me, largely because I knew it could never be mastered. There would always be more to learn, more to explore, more adventures--and the most amazing perk: I could be all the many things I'd wanted to be--at least, for the space of a novel, or a series of novels. I've been writing a long time now, and I've seen over thirty of my books published. Mostly fiction but a few nonfiction books too, and hundreds of articles in as many as 63 countries. There have been awards and bestseller lists, but I have to tell you, what keeps me in my chair is a lifetime of memories of those discussions with my dad and reading blitzes with my mom. Both have passed on and yet when I lift a pen, they are with me. And of many gifts, that is one I cherish greatly about writing. I guess I got carried away here and I haven't given you a lot of the usual biographical material. If you'd like to read that, it's all on my website in the "About" section. The url is: vickihinze.com/about. Thank you for your interest in me and my work. I'm grateful, and wish you and yours many blessings.
