Reviews - What do our customers think?
It Could Have Been MUCH Better!  May 26, 2010
I first bought this Bible when it was only available in the NT. The notes were a big disappointment. Instead of quoting the plethora of Eastern Fathers, the "Orthodox" NT is stuck on quoting Western fathers, particularly "The Venerable Beade". What a waste! People in my orbit were buying it and being let down badly because it was so...pedestrian and "western". Not Eastern at all. (More on why they're doing this later)

I'm glad the publishers had enough presence of mind to use the Septuagint for the OT. Although I don't know if they used an authoritative edition of the text. The Septuagint, as you probably know, was "the Bible" of Jesus, the Apostles, and the early Church. It is the Greek Septuagint version of the OT that is usually quoted in the NT, rather than a Hebrew text. (Their failure to include Fourth Maccabees is a symptom of the Protest-ant ways still clinging to the Evangelical Orthodox who publish this Bible. Most of them I've known don't even pray to the Theotokos in their private devotions!)

Hey, any Protest-ant readers, that means that YOU are using the wrong OT! The Holy Spirit inspired Jesus, the Apostles, the NT authors, and the early Church to use the Septuagint, not a Hebrew text such as you are using.

As for the NT I am extremely disappointed that they went with the NKJV. How much better, how much more Orthodox, if they had used an authoritative edition of the Byzantine Text-type (also known as the Majority Text type) and made a fresh new translation? Sure, they could have kept in the archaic forms of address. Perhaps they will do so in a future edition. UNLESS THE RAPTURE COMES FIRST! Right, Father David?

If the publishers are reading this, HEY! Come out with a new edition of the NT as I have described it, and stop quoting "the venerable Beade"! What, do we have a shortage of Eastern fathers so we have to stick to people whose minds are infected by Augustine and Jerome? (I have long suspected that the "Evangelical Orthodox" are Fifth Columnists whose goal is to get unwary uninformed laypeople to begin reading Augustine and embrace his mental illness and heresies, thus bringing about "blessed union" with their REAL church of choice, the Roman Catholic Church! If I'm wrong, let them stop pushing forward Augustine in their wretched magazine "AGAIN". Let them start quoting THE EASTERN FATHERS in their "Orthodox" study Bible. (Other reviewers have commented on this as well.)

THIS BIBLE IS NOT REALLY PRODUCED WITH ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS IN MIND, BUT RATHER AS SOME SORT OF EVANGELICAL TOOL TO LURE FUNDIES AND PROTESTANTS INTO THE CHURCH! "Look! We're just like you"!

Others have already commented on the terrible format and small font size and other problems. I hope they correct these awful problems. I give it it BARELY three stars because I'm feeling magnanimous.

The Orthodox Study Bible: Ancient Christianity Speaks to Today's World  May 10, 2010
The Orthodox Study Bible: Ancient Christianity Speaks to Today's World
This a must have for every Eastern Orthodox Christian Family (yes, there are Eastern Orthodx Christians in the West) as well as serious Bible scholars. The notes for each section provide for deeper understanding not only of the text but of Orothodox teaching. The beautiful full color and full page icons further illuminate the reader.

This is my Bible.  May 8, 2010
I really like this Bible. I love the way it reads and respect its style more than I do the NIV, KJV, NKJV, or RSV's. Sadly, the New Testament is merely an NKJV translation with semi-Orthodox commentary. While this translation is great for beginners who know nothing of the Eastern Orthodox Church, the commentary seems more Evangelical than Liturgical, and I felt as if the editors were trying to open the eyes of Protestant Christians to Orthodoxy rather than a general populace.

I recommend this Bible to anyone wanting a wider view of Christianity; but if I were an Orthodox Christian, I would look a little harder for a Bible with more in-depth commentary.

Note: Kindle Version DOES have Foonotes  May 4, 2010

Khristos Anesti, Alethos Anesti!
PiKhristos Aftonf, Khen Oo Methmi Aftonf!

This Study Bible is filled with notes that express the teachings of the Early Church Fathers and also Apostolic Traditions the Church. Looking forward to future editions.

Note: Just also want to point out that Footnotes are included as interactive elements in the Kindle Version of the book (i.e. click on the Cross Icon that appears by some passages). I was concerned about purchasing this as some reviewers mentioned that the Kindle edition did not have footnotes, went ahead and bought it and thy do show up in the Kindle for PC app.

Thanks and God bless.

Where's the notes?  May 4, 2010
I already have the hard book edition and love the footnotes. I just purchased the kindle edition hoping the footnotes would be included. Where are the notes?
