Reviews - What do our customers think?
Best commentary notes  Jan 16, 2007
I have many bible translations, and study bibles. I enjoy the NKJV study bible most of all because it addresses some very difficult idiomatic hebrew verses. I think it provides a great study resource. The only downside is the NKJV itself. Wish these notes were in the NIV or ESV.
15,000 notes, but only a few worthwhile ones  Sep 30, 2006
I agree fully with Encompassed Runner's review, and rather than reiterate what he said, I will just add to it. I found the notes to be shallow and ambiguous to the point of uselessness. Many times when reading, I would have a question about a verse, and check the note only to find that it basically restated the verse and did not help at all. And even more annoyingly, I found that some of the most confusing verses in the Bible, the ones that I would want notes for the most, were conspicuously absent from the notes, completely ignored.

Also worth noting is that the map pages fell out of the back within two months of purchase. It also can't withstand any amount of wear, even with a soft case. It is definitely not very well-constructed. If you are going to get a Bible that will last you fifty years, this is not it.

15,000 notes is commendable, but it is definitely a high-quanitity/low-quality sort of job. Look somewhere else. You're better off with a non-study Bible and a commentary.
The latest edition of the Nelson Study Bible  Sep 17, 2006
This is the latest edition of the Nelson Study Bible. It the study Bible that I use more than any other. It provides concise introductions and outlines for each book of the Bible and excellent comentaries on passages. Highly recommended!
As close to perfect as it gets in this life...  Jul 14, 2006
Bible study is important to me, and I have studied my way through dozens of translations. After settling on NKJV as my translation of choice, I started looking for a study Bible that satisfied my preferences and needs. Unlike the first reviewer above, I prefer that the study notes and materials refrain from dictating private interpretations to the reader. I prefer the paragraph format and study aids that don't intrude into the text area.

It is a strength to me that the cross-references are placed out of my reading area, providing a space that is without major distractions while I am reading. If I want to check cross-references or refer to notes, I know where to look--the standard place for notes to a scholarly text, down below. The text floats uncluttered above what are amazingly useful study aids.

I have the Large Print edition, which is even heftier, but a study Bible is not designed to be a book for hauling around every place you go. I'd definitely want to carry a different book for street witnessing, for example.

I commend Nelson for bringing out this wonderful edition. Not only is it chock-full of highly informative and easily accessible study aids, but it is also handsomely laid out in a thoughtful arrangement to accommodate both straightforward reading and in-depth study. It won't indoctrinate you into a single denominational (or narrower) viewpoint, and it probably won't puff you up by taking sides with your pet doctrine either. It's about as close to perfect as anything gets in this life.

The recommended selling price (around $40) is a bit steep when you're on a tight budget, but the this site resellers are carrying several brand new copies for around $20 or less--and that is truly a bargain-basement price for an astonishingly good product. It's the best I've found, bar none.
Nice Secondary Features, Weak in the Essential: Notes !  Mar 25, 2006
As much as I appreciate its great concordance, subject index, and unique Word Focus inserts (my favorite thing about this Bible), my primary use of a Study Bible is to have enhanced learning (historical, gramatical, scripture-to-scripture contexts, etc) thru the notes that accompany the Bible proper. But the Nelson NKJV Study Bible notes are annoyingly fuzzy when there is no need to be. Rather than take sides with various camps within Christendom (dispensationalists vs. covenentalists, for ex), this Bible chooses to avoid presenting helpful, decisive exegetical interpretation and (to paraphrase) says it could be this, it could be that, some say this, some say that. Furthermore, this is not an isolated failure seen only re: key prophetic passages like Daniel 9:24-27, but runs throughout the Bible. At best it's wasted space, and at worse it causes confusion, discouragement, and subjectivity in matters that are not "liberty"/gray areas but clearly taught if examined in the context of other scripture, as is the biblical method. Visually, the print is crisp and the charts/intros/timelines are especially attractive, and the crossreferences, which are insufficient, are--unlike most Bibles--not at eyelevel, but are at bottom-center. Overall, for those wanting a NKJV Study Bible, even though the MacArthur Study Bible doesn't have a concordance, I'd still recommend the TC (theologically correct) doctrine-laden MacArthur rather than the substance-challenged, PC/let's-not-take-a-side Nelson. The Nelson is not a terrible Bible, but not worth the expense or bulk ( a small reference Bible would work just as well).
