Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not only for "students"  Feb 7, 2007
I am a pastor who's been in ministry for over 15 years. When I first saw this "Student" Bible, I quickly dismissed it as the first of many lines of youth-oriented Bibles. But several years back, I happened to pick this up at our church's Lost & Found (many Bibles can be found there, as you must also know from first hand experience) and was delighted at what I found.

I recommend the bulkier NIV Study Bible or Quest Study Bible for my congregation so that they can study the texts as they read them. But for me, I wanted a Bible that didn't have so much study materials that forced me to glance here and there, but something with small morsels of goodies here and there to make me pause at the important (or most often quoted) passages for a second glance. With this Student Bible, I am able to be free of "study texts" so that I can engage in the text without an external guide, but as I read through the Bible, this Bible makes me stop to read the short sidebars or quick notes here and there that reminds me of some important points. As a person who's read the Bible many times over, I really like this feature -- never overbearing, but in perfect amount.

These days, I recommend this Bible to my congregation.

Good overall  Jan 30, 2006
-Very good. I like the quality of its leather, and the bookmark and holding box that come with it are the icing on the cake.
-My only complaint would have to be the tendency of the pages to fold inwards. But hey, this is what happens with non-hardback books.

Pleased as Punch!  Aug 9, 2005
This Bible exceeded our expectations as a great present for our youth. They loved it. We liked the glossy hardcover with the silver accent and the reference guides in every chapter were very effective. We liked the price and the delivery was on time.

I'm a New Christian  Nov 16, 2003
Hi! I'm a new Christian and a foriegner. When I read this bible with its short description and easy-to understand English, I began to enjoy reading the Word of God. This made me yearn to learn morae and be part of a Christian community.

I believe that it doesnt matter whether the bible is King James (too-difficult English) or New Version, it must convey the message of Christ. Besides we are not saved by how many times and how accurate the bible, even Satan reads it as shown when he was tempting Jesus. Its alla bout love, faith and hope in Lord Jesus. We simply understand Him more by reading His words and obeying His commands. That's the challenge.

I'd give this book a five star because of its presentation, easy-to read English and the various description how and what a Jewish culture means. Sometimes we base the Scriture on ouw own understanding , experience and culture. We forget that Jesus is a Jew and its a good insight what His culture then and how they are made different amoingst all nations.

:)

Well written, relevant, but...  Apr 13, 2003
I bought this book hoping to learn more about Christianity. I won`t lie, it was very informative and obviously we all know that the Bible is very important.

The bone I have with this is that Christ doesn`t even come into the picture until you`ve read well more than half of the book!

It`s a difficult read. It goes from very easy stories at the beginning to very boring geneaologies of people that go on for pages and pages. I don`t think it`s so important to know the names of 50 consecutive generations of father-son, going down the family tree to finally get to someone who is only a minor character..

Some of the songs are quite interesting, especially when you think of how old they are and how they have been encorporated and revised into modern songs.

Reading over some of the stories I learnt as a kid (Noah`s ark) for example, are much better in this book than the vague remembrances I have.

It`s a difficult book with a lot of contradictions. Lots of killing and war, then on the other hand you`ll have anti-war messages.

The Old Testament comes across as a kind of chronology of events, most of them mythical.

The New Testament seems to speak more to the reader, yet the same events are told over again, sometimes several times. The "Revelations" part is quite interesting in its imagery yet it can be frightening knowing that some people take this as fact. I wouldn`t want to run into some of the things mentioned in this chapter nor people that are convinced that this is a literal description of our destined future.

I agree with Jesus` underlying message, and for that I recommend the book, but on the other hand this book leads people to really believe in certain things with uncontrolled zeal which I think is dangerous.

This book helped me get through some tough times in high school, knowing that other people too have stepped back and viewed life from a participating, yet distant perspective.

Take it as you will.

If your inclined to read this sort of book, I would also suggest meditation, a good starter being "The Relaxation Response." Meditation in combination with reading this book would be much better than simply just reading this book due to some sort of obligation.

Enjoy!
