More About Frederick Fyvie Bruce, Karina W. Davidson, Robert M. Kaplan, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Tienlon Ho, Elizabeth Randolph & Jon Buller

Frederick Fyvie Bruce Frederick Fyvie Bruce (F.F. Bruce) (12 October 1910 – 11 September 1990) was a Biblical scholar and one of the founders of the modern evangelical understanding of the Bible. His first book, New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? (1943), was voted by the American evangelical periodical Christianity Today in 2006 as one of the top 50 books "which had shaped evangelicals".

Bruce was born in Elgin, Moray, in Scotland and educated at the University of Aberdeen, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and the University of Vienna. After teaching Greek for several years, first at the University of Edinburgh and then at the University of Leeds, he became head of the Department of Biblical History and Literature at the University of Sheffield in 1947. Aberdeen University bestowed an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on him in 1957. In 1959 he moved to the University of Manchester where he became Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis. In his career he wrote over 40 books and served as editor of The Evangelical Quarterly and the Palestine Exploration Quarterly. He retired from teaching in 1978.

Bruce was a distinguished scholar on the life and ministry of Paul the Apostle and wrote several studies, the best known of which is Paul: Apostle of the Free Spirit (published in the United States as Paul: Apostle of the Heart Set Free). He also wrote commentaries on several biblical books including Romans, Acts of the Apostles, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, the Gospel and Epistles of John, and the Epistle to the Hebrews.

Bruce was in Christian fellowship at various places during his life, though his primary commitment was to the Open Brethren among whom he grew up. He enjoyed the fellowship and acceptance of this group, though he was very much a maverick in relation to his own personal beliefs. He never accepted the dispensationalism and pretribulationism usually associated with the Brethren, and he was also an advocate of the public ministry of women – something that Plymouth Brethren would still disapprove of today. Most of Bruce's works were scholarly, but he also wrote several popular works on the Bible. He viewed the New Testament writings as historically reliable and the truth claims of Christianity as hinging on their being so. To Bruce this did not mean that the Bible was always precise, or that this lack of precision could not lead to considerable confusion. He believed, however, that the passages that were still open to debate were ones that had no substantial bearing on Christian theology and thinking. Bruce was honored with two scholarly works by his colleagues and former students, one to mark his sixtieth and the other to mark his seventieth birthday. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, and served as President of the Society for Old Testament Study, and also as President of the Society for New Testament Study. He is one of a handful of scholars thus recognized by his peers in both fields.

Frederick Fyvie Bruce was born in 1910 and died in 1990.

Very Good Documentation  May 8, 2006
I really liked this book because it was historical and gave all the sources. I particularly liked the section where Professor Bruce documented Jews claiming to have killed Jesus Christ -- Jewish Talmud and other Jewish sources take credit for Jews killing Christ Jesus. Anyone who doubts that Jews killed Jesus Christ is refusing to take Jewish documents from the ancient world seriously.
New Testament History  Mar 16, 2006
I found this book very helpful in my study of the New Testament. The background information is great. The book is very readable. In college I was a history major, I wish we had had more of this kind of book. Dr Bruce brings things alive. He uses his resources well and paints a complete picture of the period. I am so glad this book was required for my New Testament Survey class at seminary.
An academic work, but worth it.  Mar 13, 2006
I read this work because it was reccomended through Ligonier Ministries, which was founded by the venerable Dr. RC Sproul (who I've met several times and yes, he is that smart).

There's a lot for everybody in this one: archaeology, theology, history (back to classical antiquity), you name it. This book is for the higher critic/revisionist who gleefully promote new works everyday finding alleged contradictions and other fallacies within the NT. F.F. Bruce raises problematic areas for consideration, but tries to resolve them where he can. Where he cannot, he simply states so. I can't think of a more honest and serious book of its kind, which is why this one has stood the test of time. The higher-critic crowd is always foisting their speculation-based conclusions on us in their books. But F.F. Bruce refreshingly uses his expert command of Greek and Hebrew and applies these scriptures to the historical context in which it was written.

Forget the lazy, fluff-stuff at your local Christian bookstore and pick this one up.

Great Historical Overview  Jun 30, 2005
Here's what you get with this book. You get the historical background necessary to understand the New Testament more effectively, whether you believe in it or not. In addition, you have the obligatory section on the life of Jesus and John the Baptist, and the history of the early martyrs of the church. Overall, Brown gives an excellent and well balanced account of the historical events.
For the motivated and serious reader....  Feb 21, 2005
I enjoy history and I am a Christian looking to support my faith. I bought this book for those two reasons. That said, this book has given me what I was looking for, but not without a cost. I am motivated don't get me wrong, hey I bought this for "leisure" reading. That said, I have to work to get up the energy to read this book. It is a good read, but not an easy read. It is dry. That said, it will give you information on the politics, history, religious groups and other information helpful in understanding the context of the new testament. If you are a casual reader, you have been warned. This book may sit on your shelf gathering dust...
