Reviews - What do our customers think?
Decent, worth checking into commentary on Revelation  May 19, 2007
This commentary on Revelation is okay with some very good helpful info, yet also with some not so good info. Many of the introductory issues are covered quite well, i.e.- historical background, date, author, setting, literary nature. The commentary procedes on a verse by verse basis, exposting the text of Revelation. For the most part Kistemaker reaches pluasible "interpretations", though sometimes his treatment will leave one wishing more had been explained. Comes from a conservative, "amill" perspective, that takes seriously Revelation's symbolic nature as apocalyptic literature. The book also gives good overviews of chapter sections from time to time, helping one to avoid losing the forest for the trees. I give it 3 stars simply because as mentioned above, sometimes the expostion is, while okay, yet it sometimes lacks a clear conclusion and seems to linger a bit in the air. Still, if you have the money to spare for yet another Revelation commentary, this work is worth checking out, though it would not be my first pick. For some smaller sized works, 200 pages or so, I would check first and foremost with Craig Koester's outstandingly learned and level headed book, Revelation And The End Of All Things (it's my personal favorite). Also very good are William Hendriksen's More Than Conquerors and for a very concise introductory work on Revelation, Bruce Metzger's Breaking The Code is a good intelligent work by a highly respected new testament scholar. For those who are serious about Revelation, and want a larger work, the massively learned and quite large work by Greg Beale (New International Greek Commentary) is a must.
