More About Gordon D. Fee

Frederick Fyvie Bruce Frederick Fyvie Bruce (F.F. Bruce) (12 October 1910 – 11 September 1990) was a Biblical scholar and one of the founders of the modern evangelical understanding of the Bible. His first book, New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? (1943), was voted by the American evangelical periodical Christianity Today in 2006 as one of the top 50 books "which had shaped evangelicals".

Bruce was born in Elgin, Moray, in Scotland and educated at the University of Aberdeen, Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and the University of Vienna. After teaching Greek for several years, first at the University of Edinburgh and then at the University of Leeds, he became head of the Department of Biblical History and Literature at the University of Sheffield in 1947. Aberdeen University bestowed an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on him in 1957. In 1959 he moved to the University of Manchester where he became Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis. In his career he wrote over 40 books and served as editor of The Evangelical Quarterly and the Palestine Exploration Quarterly. He retired from teaching in 1978.

Bruce was a distinguished scholar on the life and ministry of Paul the Apostle and wrote several studies, the best known of which is Paul: Apostle of the Free Spirit (published in the United States as Paul: Apostle of the Heart Set Free). He also wrote commentaries on several biblical books including Romans, Acts of the Apostles, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, the Gospel and Epistles of John, and the Epistle to the Hebrews.

Bruce was in Christian fellowship at various places during his life, though his primary commitment was to the Open Brethren among whom he grew up. He enjoyed the fellowship and acceptance of this group, though he was very much a maverick in relation to his own personal beliefs. He never accepted the dispensationalism and pretribulationism usually associated with the Brethren, and he was also an advocate of the public ministry of women – something that Plymouth Brethren would still disapprove of today. Most of Bruce's works were scholarly, but he also wrote several popular works on the Bible. He viewed the New Testament writings as historically reliable and the truth claims of Christianity as hinging on their being so. To Bruce this did not mean that the Bible was always precise, or that this lack of precision could not lead to considerable confusion. He believed, however, that the passages that were still open to debate were ones that had no substantial bearing on Christian theology and thinking. Bruce was honored with two scholarly works by his colleagues and former students, one to mark his sixtieth and the other to mark his seventieth birthday. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy, and served as President of the Society for Old Testament Study, and also as President of the Society for New Testament Study. He is one of a handful of scholars thus recognized by his peers in both fields.

Frederick Fyvie Bruce was born in 1910 and died in 1990.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
2 down and 14 to go!  Apr 15, 2007
I have The First Epistle to the Corinthians(Gordon Fee), and The Gospel According to John (Leon Morris) so far. This is the best commentary I have found anywhere! I wish I could afford the whole set at once, but I will collect them all eventually. This will sit alongside Kittel's Theological Dictionary New Testament as some of my most treasured possessions.

The real learn the Word commentary set  Jan 11, 2007
There is simply no better commentary set that combines readability with scholarship. I have a dozen or so commentary sets (via Logos software), from the `Pillar's NT Commentary, `The New International Greek Testament Commentary, to the `Word Biblical Commentary,' even the `International Critical Commentary Series.' I only use the NICNT and the NICOT commentaries on a regular basis.

They are easy to read, don't require the reader to understand the original languages (as does ICC and WBC), and are excellently researched and scholarly. Frankly their insights and Holy Spirit inspiration are life changing. For example Gordon Fee's 1st Corinthian Commentary tackles the thorny and contradictory texts about woman in ministry. His answer, while controversial, cannot be dismissed, both because of Dr. Fee's credentials and his astute argumentation. Another volume, Dr. Mounce's commentary on Revelation, makes clear what so many other books either make incomprehensible with academic babble or trivial and imprisoned within a predetermined theology (such as pre-rapture dispensationalism).

These books use careful exegesis, are conservative in nature while giving room for the Holy Spirit. They are simply a delight to read. They are amazing. While other commentaries either get lost in the nuance of language or endless historical debate about a passage's meaning, these books find a balance in the subjects and their opinions. While writing on all the various sections a commentary must write about (author, history, canonical importance, etc.) the emphasis is learning and explaining the Word. What more could we ask of a commentary! This is a go-to commentary that will help the bible and its meaning come alive in your life. Rather than listening to many of the `fad' teachings of the day these books can be instrumental in finding out what scripture really has to say about things.

Excellent Scholarship, but no sacrifice in readability  Oct 11, 2006
This series is consistently excellent. The scholarship is top notch--well referenced, careful exegesis with a mind towards textual accuracy. The amazing thing about this series is that scholarship no where takes a back seat to comprehension--I am a lay person, and am able to read, enjoy, and profit from the ideas set forth by the authors. The authors themselves are conservative in nature as a whole, and are fair minded about discussing previous history of the exegesis of a passage. This is one of my go-to commentary series when preparing for Bible study.

What the set does not include  Sep 7, 2006
I just received this commentary set. As an annotation to the previous reviewer, and to help potential buyers, as of this date, the set does NOT include commentaries on Matthew, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, and Jude.
