Item Description...
William Placher confronts challenging questions: Does a theology with a male savior inevitably contribute to the oppression of women? Does a theology with a suffering saviour valorize suffering in a way that only makes it likely to continue? Is a theology that identifies one human figure as the self-revelation of God, the unique savior, somehow intrinsically unfair to and oppressive of adherents of other religious traditions? Placher also deals with the issue of how the Christian community should function in contemporary American society and the academic world.

Publishers Description

This insightful study of how Jesus reflects God will be interesting and accessible not only to scholars but to pastors and church members. Well-known author William Placher shows that the God revealed in Jesus Christ is portrayed in the biblical narratives as a God willing to risk vulnerability in order to fully love creation.

Worth Reading  Jun 10, 2008
The author presents a view of God drawn from the Gospel narratives, Mark in particular, which portray God not in power but in weakness and vulnerable love. He then draws implications for the rest of the church's theology, ethics and worship. Themes from this provocative book will remain in mind long after it sits back on the shelf.

I struggled with whether this book is a deeper plunge into Christianity or a version of Christianity deeply unsure of itself. Also, as the author himself notes, at times people need a powerful God, not a vulnerable one. I wondered in these pages what happened to the God whose awesome power created the universe.

All in all, though, this is a work of serious theology well worth reading.
God is love, therefore...  Jul 27, 2004
This book is an exercise in finishing that sentence. Placher sets out to understand what it means to confess that the nature of God is found in love not power. In the first part of the book, the nature of God is explored. Placher contends that God is vulnurable in love, eternal in a way that allows for the flow of events rather than a static state, and Triune. The second part of the book explores some contemporary issues in theology: the use of Scripture and treatment of marginalized groups of people. The final section of the book deals with how Christians should live, both within the church and in the academy. This is a wonderful book. If you truly believe God is love and want to explore the implications of that belief no matter what the consequences, this is a book for you.
Love and not Power is what God is about  Oct 15, 1998
An excellant survey of the gospel of Christ from the heart. The critical analysis and thinking is very evident as well. For those who like C.S. Lewis, you will find this book a delight to read. His study on the Trinity of God is very well done.
