I first read the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1988 when I was 30 yrs old. I was on jury duty and needed something to read my first day serving as a juror. My 12 year old daughter said " Here daddy read this, you will like it ". I was soon reading each book in the order written by the Author. The books started me off on a reading spree the lasted years and lead to The Hobbit ,Lord of the Rings. I even got into Charles Dickens and others. The Narnia books are in a word ' Wonderful '
Your pre-teen children after reading these books, will probably dig these books as much as you, easy to read yet have some words and phrases used in Old English thus teaching the reader how it was, back in those days. I added an English accent when each character spoke, I could smell the forest and see in my minds eye, each scene. I had lots of fun reading these books and hated it when the book was coming to the end. I never enjoyed reading so much as I did then. Read these stories and compare to the movies. So you can say that is not the way C. S. Lewis wrote it, the movies were nice but lacked much compared to the books.
I really will never forget nor stop recommending to all who would listen, Treat yourself to an Adventure and Fantasy so enjoyable. It will stay in your heart and mind no matter how old you get, it may even affect the way you see things. The story has a message we all could stand to listen to.

These books are some of my favorite. It's hard to explain why, but I can start by saying some things about why I love how they are written. Firstly, C.S.Lewis wrote it in a way that makes it seem so real. The way he describes things is amazing. Giving so great detail, and yet leaving room for your own imagination. It's amazing. Second, he seems to know kids so well. The things the characters act and say I can imagine myself saying and doing. Thirdly, when I was reading the books I didn't even feel like I was reading a book. I felt like I was in the book! The stories in these books are wonderful, full of adventure and magic. The books had me laughing at some parts, and crying at others. I got so into the books. I love how it's an allegory, a hidden story that you may not notice right at first. My 3 favorite books in the Chronicles are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Horse and His Boy. But I love and recommend them all! And about reading order: At the end of the day, I don't think it really matters what order you read them in. Of course, I don't recommend starting at Last Battle and finishing at The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe!!!! :)! But I mean, whatever order you choose, whether Chronalogical or not, they are great books and they will be no matter what order!
