Item Description...
Arguing from Scripture and history, Dr. Boyd makes a compelling case that whenever the church gets too close to any political or national ideology, it is disastrous for the church and harmful to society. Dr. Boyd contends that the American Evangelical Church has allowed itself to be co-opted by the political right (and some by the political left) and exposes how this is harming the church?s unique calling to build the kingdom of God. In the course of his argument, Dr. Boyd challenges some of the most deeply held convictions of evangelical Christians in America ? for example, that America is, or ever was, ?a Christian nation? or that Christians ought to be trying to ?take America back for God.?

Publishers Description
The church was established to serve the world with Christ-like love, not to rule the world. It is called to look like a corporate Jesus, dying on the cross for those who crucified him, not a religious version of Caesar. It is called to manifest the kingdom of the cross in contrast to the kingdom of the sword. Whenever the church has succeeded in gaining what most American evangelicals are now trying to get -- political power -- it has been disastrous both for the church and the culture. Whenever the church picks up the sword, it lays down the cross. The present activity of the religious right is destroying the heart and soul of the evangelical church and destroying its unique witness to the world. The church is to have a political voice, but we are to have it the way Jesus had it: by manifesting an alternative to the political, 'power over, ' way of doing life. We are to transform the world by being willing to suffer for others -- exercising 'power under, ' not by getting our way in society -- exercising 'power over

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Fresh perspective on a widly held myth  Mar 10, 2007
Gregory Boyd is a theologian with passion, conviction and talent. His well written treatise on the exercise of power and the addiction many in the church have to this obsession with political power is excellent reading. Too bad this is not required reading for all the conservative and liberal christian activist. Take positions, speak passionately on issues, hold strong convictions but remember that the Kingdom of God is not about power . . . it is about service.

Religion is always comfortable with power, control and judgement. Faith and the teaching of Christ on the other hand are about service, sacrifice and unconditional love!
If you just can't call abortion wrong  Mar 5, 2007
If it's basically impossible for you to force the words "abortion is murder and murder is wrong" out of your pen you might be a liberal. Dr. Boyd, what a disappointment. You had me till then. Abortion is the ultimate violence.

message needs to be heard  Feb 17, 2007
The book isn't perfect, but I felt so strongly about the message I donated it to my church library. He said things in there that I have felt strongly since 9/11. The chapter about "civil religion" particularly spoke to me, as the concept of "God and Country" has always appeared to me as nothing more than an American god. I thought it ironic that while reading the book I saw that D James Kennedy had recently written: "What if America were a Christian Nation, Again" That is why Mr. Boyds message needs to be heard.
Great book for Christians struggling with the politicizing of the faith we see today  Feb 13, 2007
This is the second book from Boyd that I'd read and was very glad I did. For years this merging of faith and politics has been gnawing at my Christianity. I knew there was something wrong with this trend (right-wing zealots tainting the pure message of Jesus' sacrifice and grace), but I couldn't put it into words or a solid argument.

Boyd makes a powerful and prophetic argument that's well writen and clear.
Well-written and Thought-provoking  Feb 12, 2007
A lot of us have been missing the mark on who we're called to be as believers. This is a must-read for every Christian.
