Item Description...
Russell Fink is an artist trapped in the body of a copier salesman. His fiancée is nearly as psychotic as his family. And someone has murdered Sonny, his allegedly clairvoyant basset hound. His mission is simple ? salvage a job he hates, convince his flaky fiancée that their engagement really is over, and find Sonny?s killer.

Publishers Description
Russell Fink is twenty-six years old and determined to salvage a job he hates so he can finally move out of his parents' house for good. He's convinced he gave his twin sister cancer when they were nine years old. And his crazy fiancee refuses to accept the fact that their engagement really is over. Then Sonny, his allegedly clairvoyant basset hound, is found murdered. The ensuing amateur investigation forces Russell to confront several things at once---the enormity of his family's dysfunction, the guy stalking his family, and his long-buried feelings for a most peculiar love interest. At its heart, My Name Is Russell Fink is a comedy, with sharp dialogue, characters steeped in authenticity, romance, suspense, and fresh humor. With a postmodern style similar to Nick Hornby and Douglas Coupland, the author explores reconciliation, forgiveness, and faith in the midst of tragedy. No amount of neurosis or dysfunction can derail God's redemptive purposes.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not my normal read, but...  May 11, 2010
I picked up this book when it was a Kindle freebie some time back but just got around to reading it. I actually am not generally a fan of Christian fiction, but didn't realize this fit that genre until I was already hooked.

This book has some moments when you ask yourself "Really??" and you have to entertain some pretty hardcore suspension of disbelief. The main character, Russell, is a pretty tortured soul in an unhappy relationship, stuck in a job he hates and more than a decade later, illogically blaming himself for his twin sister's death. The plot has many twists and turns and mysteries. An aging dog Russell parties with, a dysfunctional family led by a quacky, washed up faith healer dad, an alcoholic mother and an untrustworthy older brother. Burned out on religion, Russell runs into some characters and situations that make him question his lack of faith. Despite his shortcomings, Russell is very forgiving, and by the end of the book seems to be a bit surer of himself and what he wants out of life.

A professor once told me that a book needs to have a "satisfying" ending. I'm a bit bothered that not all the loose ends were tied up in this one and that I still had some lingering questions. But it's not so bad that I regret reading the book either.

I like the author's writing style, the interesting characters, and the lack of a "holier than thou" tone. It wasn't perfect, but it kept my attention, I enjoyed it, and I finished it in two days. Definitely worth the read.
Interesting author  Apr 13, 2010
I found the book interesting, although it took me a long time to get through it -- it was not something I couldn't put down. That said, however, the style was light and funny and there was a message to be told. The attitude of the young man was interesting -- something I see too often these days. I thought it was a worthwhile read.
Paperback Light  Mar 29, 2010
I truly wanted to like this book, but the story never seemed to go anywhere. I read an interview with the author and found that the book came from a series of short stories. That's exactly the feel I got from the book, just a series of stories with these characters here and there with various events going on in their lives that didn't seem to link together too well. I stuck it out to the end, but unlike Snickers, it didn't satisfy.
Nice Story  Mar 13, 2010
Not to much action, not boring and the book keeps you wanting to keep reading.

A good read.
I'm mad at Russell  Mar 3, 2010
Okay folks, this is an edit of the review I posted yesterday.

When I wrote (literally punching the keys) the review yesterday I had just snapped off my Kindle and I was mad. After a little reflection and a bit of sage advice (YOU know who you are :-) )I've decided to take a more calm approach. The original title of this review was "This book is a dog". A more appropriate title is the one you see now. I'm not so much as mad at the book as I am mad about Russell.

I stand by my point that Russell is a fink. A whiney hypochondriac with loose morals at best. I guess I don't mind too much if I don't care about the main character in a book, but making me despise the guy is not conducive to a good read. As I turned each page, my frustration with the guy continued to grow until reaching the point at some 39% of the way through that I just could not continue.

Part of the frustration also had to do with not getting a sense of story. The book seemed to chronicle the daily exploits of Mr. Fink and it just didn't seem to be going anywhere. I guess I figured that by the time I was almost half way through the book if a story didn't show up, it wasn't likely to anytime soon.

With that said, I did find the book highly readable in terms of the author's writing style. It would be interesting to have a look at the next offering out of the chute.
