Item Description...
If we have the eyes to see and the ears to hear, wisdom can be found in even the simplest of ordinary moments-driving to work, getting children ready for school, or sitting with a child on our lap. Denise Roy offers thirty-five entertaining and touching stories that show how family moments can bring spiritual rewards. A mother of four, a wife, and a psychotherapist, Roy often finds herself juggling some combination of work, kids, and minivan. Roy's intimate approach invites us to recognize the grace within our daily lives. We needn't pull over to find enlightenment; the divine is always present, even in the carpool lane.

Publishers Description
One person's car pool is another person's pilgrimage
In "My Monastery Is a Minivan," Denise Roy offers thirty-five entertaining and touching stories that show how family moments can bring the greatest spiritual rewards. We find everything we need for spiritual growth as we picnic with the children, go to the grocery store, and pick up the morning paper. Denise's intimate approach invites us to recognize the grace that exists within our own lives. We needn't pull over and look for enlightenment; the divine is always present, even in the car-pool lane. Stories of finding wisdom in the everyday God is in the silence and also in the noise. Spirit is in stillness and also in silliness. The Sacred is in the monastery and also in the minivan.
"I don't know how it is that days filled with children and noise and mess and clutter can seem endless, and then, when the kids are grown, it can seem as if those same days passed ever too quickly. I don't know how many billions of stars are up in the sky or how suffering can hold the seeds of resurrection. I don't know how to answer all my children's questions, or my own. I don't know how to completely let go.Life keeps inviting me to learn these things, presenting me each and every day with opportunities for growth. And it does seem that when I open my eyes and heart to others, I begin to recognize something that has been there all along. It feels like a presence, a light, a love that is unbounded by time or space or matter. It moves within us and among us, healing us, filling us, calling us to recognize that what we seek is right here in our midst."
--From "My Monastery Is a Minivan" "I was thrilled to discover a soul sister in Denise Roy. This book will be a wonderful companion to any parent, whatever their faith tradition."--Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer, author, "Parenting as a Spiritual Journey"

Denise Roy's minivan wisdom invites you to discover the sacred right smack in the middle of ordinary life."--Steve and Patt Saso, authors, "10 Best Gifts for Your Teen"
"The humor and honesty of Denise Roy's writing pulled me in right away. If you are not a saint but an ordinary man or woman hoping to live the joys and trials of daily life with your eyes and your heart wide open to the sacred, this is a book for you."--Oriah Mountain Dreamer, author, "The Invitation and The Dance
""Some people can hold up a lens to life that reveals the depth and beauty all around us. Send them to Me  Mar 23, 2007
When you threw the book out, I wish you'd thrown it to me. I'd love to be able to afford to send this book to all of the moms in my acquaintance. Full of life, wit, wisdom, it tells us that our holy place is inside, that God is present in all we do, that there is grace and spirituality in each everyday thing we do. How much more Catholic can you get. The wisdom of Denise Roy is the same wisdom of Saint Teresa. Seek to do everyday things in a loving, worshipful way. There is great beauty in that. Amen
Not a Catholic book at all.....very disappointed.  Jul 10, 2006
I bought this book used and was very disappointed. I had thought the book would be about spiritual matters from a Catholic perspective but I did not find that. When the author starts to call God, "Spirit" (as though they are unsure of Whom they are addressing), I guess I should have known!

I had been a postulant (never took vows) in a contemplative monastery myself before I left and ended up getting married a few years later and so I was attracted to the whole monastery title.

I noticed upon glance at the intro, several of the commentators were female clergy members (the Catholic church does not believe women can be priests so they were obviously protestant ministers or self-proclaimed ministers) and I saw NO Catholic commentators on the book.

I am really disappointed and ended up throwing the book out. I'm sure the author meant well, as we are all at different places in our spiritual life but I think it is a better recommendation for Catholic readers to pick books that either have the old imprimateur or come from well-respected Catholic sources, such as Ignatius Press or the Daughters of St. Paul or stores like, or
Great Read  Aug 16, 2003
This book was most enjoyable to read. It gave a lot of insights into finding God in the everyday activity of life. Even though I am a guy and do not have a Catholic background I found that I could relate to the stories. Enjoy.
This is not a CATHOLIC monastery!  Feb 16, 2003
I was confused at first when reading this book. The author's Catholic references and background led me to expect Catholic spirituality. Not so! Her minivan is a BUDDHIST monastery! I guess the book is OK for what it is, but I was disappointed that it was not the Catholic book I had been led to believe it was.
funny & wonderfully inspiring  Jul 25, 2002
Reading this book changed my way of seeing the world. It made me laugh out loud, cry with sadness, and open up more to live my life with deeper compassion. In her acknowledgments, Denise Roy mentions that she was inspired by many of my own favorite authors: Anna Quindlen, Anne Lamott, Rachel Naomi Remen, Anne Dillard, Thich Nhat Hanh. I'd recommend books written by these wonderful authors, and I'd add this book to my list of highly recommended books.
