Reviews - What do our customers think?
No stars for this fundamentally flawed "Bible" for kids  Jan 29, 2010
First of all, let me mention the hideously ugly artwork, which makes you wonder what kind of illustrator, editor and publisher would deliberately inflict these unattractive pictures on innocent children.

But even more important than the art -- which I will freely admit is a matter of taste -- is the fact that author Carolyn Larsen changed the clear teaching of scripture when putting these stories together. Yes, I realize that this "Bible" is a paraphrase in the loosest form of the term, but that is no excuse EVER for changing the meaning of God's infallible Word. God's Word is NOT a matter of taste or opinion, not a matter of you know what Jesus meant more than He did or the translators of Scripture did.

On pp. 440-445, there's a story titled "A Special Dinner with Friends" and it's a story about the Last Supper. Instead of re-wording Jesus' words to make them more understandable for children, Larsen completely changes their meaning:

"Jesus picked up a load of bread and asked God to bless it. He broke it into pieces and hgave it to His friends. 'Eat this. It is like My body that will be broken for you.' He picked up the cup of wine and thanked God for it. 'Drink this,' He said to the disciples. 'It is like My blood that will be spilled for you.'"

Did you catch it?

"It is LIKE My body."

"It is LIKE My blood."

As my eyes took in those words, I thought "Huh? But...What?"

I picked up my own Bible and looked up the three accounts of the Last Supper in the gospels, plus Jesus' Bread of Life Discourse in John's gospel, plus the pertinent passage from I Corinthians. Those five excerpts are as follows:

--Matthew 26: 26-29
--Mark 14: 22-25
--Luke 22: 14-21
--John 6: 35-64
--I Corinthians 11: 23-26

I looked up those five verses online in the following translations: The Amplified Bible, the American Standard Version, the King James Version, the Message Bible, the New International Reader's Version, the New King James Version, the New Living Translation, the Revised Standard Version and Young's Literal Translation and guess what?

In not ONE of those versions did the scripture verses read "This is LIKE My body" or "This is LIKE My blood."

So what's going on with this children's Bible? I mean, I don't think a collection of simple stories to entertain and inform young children necessarily has a sinister agenda behind it, but then again, why would the author change the clear meaning of the Scripture? That's not something you get to add to or subtract from just because you don't agree with the theology, Carolyn Larsen.

I don't know about any of the other stories in this book; I just happened to stumble across that one while I was leafing through it while browsing through the library of a church I was visiting, so I don't know if Larsen felt it was important to correct Jesus on any of the other things he said. But if you plan to buy a Bible for a child? Don't buy this one. Don't contribute money to an author, publisher, who-or-whatever that thinks this kind of thing is okay.

It's not okay. No, it may not be a hideous theological flaw in a seminary textbook, but it's bad enough.

perfect children's bible  Jan 17, 2007
This is a fantastic children's bible. There are over 90 Old and New Testament stories in it with fantastic cartoon-like illustrations. Each story is a short 6 pages long so it will keep their attention spans as well. My son, who is 5 years old, now recognizes the bible stories that he hears at church because of us reading this bible to him. I also use this children's bible in my Sunday School class and those children love it as well. As another person reviewed, the bible does say "This is like my body." I noticed that immediately too and just scratched "like" out. I love it other than that "flaw". Yes, it's a flaw. However I am Catholic and figured it was a Protestant who "translated" it. I figure if my children ask me later why I scratched one word out, it would be a good doctrinal lesson for me to teach them.
