Reviews - What do our customers think?
An Amazing Read  Feb 21, 2007
If you have never had the chance of speaking with somebody who has spent 4 decades of their life in the Middle East, and you are curious about what life is/was actually like there, then I highly recommend this book. As a first-time author now at the age of 79, Kevork Medzadourian's memoirs are an excellent and intriguing recollection of events that took place during his life spent in Iraq from the late 1920s to late 1960s. He is not of Iraqi descent, though he was born and raised in Iraq, and he and his wife both worked for the American Embassy in Baghdad, so it is not the viewpoint of someone who is Iraqi by race but rather an ordinary man who was able to see things as someone with ties with both Iraq and the United States. It's obvious that he is not a professional writer, and his simple writing just adds to the comforting style of this book. It's almost as if you are sitting in your living room with him visiting as a guest telling you stories of his life the way good old grandpa does.

Iraq has not always been the war-torn country we think of now when we hear its name. Medzadourian's collection of events gives readers an idea of what life was like in a Middle Eastern country with explanations of everything from living day to day to how the government dealt with conflict, revolution, assassinations, and the mob--to visiting America and dealing with the culture shock and other hardships. This book is also full of fun facts. One of the dozens of things I learned, for example, is that it's the norm for Iraqis to spend their nights sleeping on the roofs of their houses in the summertime to stay cooler. There are a lot of these interesting tidbits mixed in throughout the book. The comparisons between cultures are wonderful to read about.

A nice touch was learning a few Arabic words with translations. Kevork also met Saddam Hussein himself briefly in a shop when Hussein was young and still a nobody. Apparently Saddam Hussein liked to eat lettuce! This book is fun and educational, and I recommend it to anybody who is interested in culture or even someone who just likes to read a personal life story now and then.
