Item Description...
The scholar Robin A. Leaver holds a unique place in sacred music scholarship because of his training in both music and theology. He has written widely, bringing acute insights on a variety of musical repertories and topics related to Martin Luther, sixteenth-century psalmody, hymnody, and the sacred music of Johann Sebastian Bach. In Music and Theology, twelve scholars influenced by Leaver's work contribute essays in diverse areas of sacred music history and philosophy, focusing on the intersection of music and theology. Ranging chronologically from the twelfth-century writer and composer Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) to present-day considerations of American church music and worship, the volume provides thought-provoking new work for all who study church music. Reflecting the prominent emphasis in Leaver's own scholarship, eight chapters deal with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, including his organ music, sacred cantatas, and passion settings. A final chapter provides a chronological listing of Leaver's own voluminous writings on music and theology.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Music yes, Theology maybe  Feb 5, 2008
This well produced volume, compiled to honour the theologically-oriented (and still living) musicologist, Robin A. Leaver, presents the work of scholars who the editor, Daniel Zager, believes it "safe to say ... benefitted at one time or another from Robin's scholarly assistance and encouragement." Anne Leahy, the single representative of Leaver's twenty-three doctoral student supervisees listed in the final chapter of the book, provides what is arguably the most comprehensive, imaginative and satisfying article in the book. Her essay, which appears to have been written specifically for the publication, investigates all of Bach's settings of Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland and is a true dedication in content, form, and orientation to the work of Leaver.

The quality of the essays in this collection is mixed - from harried to beautifully crafted - and there are some that seem overly defensive and/or hyperbolic in their claims regarding their contribution to the field, but all are informed by rigorous scholarship. Of the Bach chapters, only 3 really cover theological topics - the remainder are musicological essays on religious music. For those drawn to the book by its primary title, "Music and Theology," several chapters will provide intellectual sustenance, with a diversity of topics ranging from the philosophies of the contemporaries of Hildegard of Bingen regarding symphonia and harmonia, to parallels and differences between apple seeds and American Church music, to an exploration of the opposing forces of beauty and terror via a discussion of the requiems of Faure and Britten. A further two chapters, Stephen A. Crisps' "Early Lutheran Hymnals and Other Musical Sources in the Kessler Reformation Collection in Emory University," and Sherry L. Vellucci's "Robin A. Leaver: A Bibliography of his Writings" are straight-forward bibliographic references. The former is annotated, while the latter is a list which updates a privately published bibliography from 1999.
