Item Description...
The pieces are in place. The curtain rises for the final act. God is about to die.
To many, the story of Christ's crucifixion has become so familiar that it has lost its ability to shock, outrage, or stir any great emotion. In The Murder of Jesus, John MacArthur presents this pivotal moment in the life of Jesus in a way that forces readers to witness this event in all its power. The passion of Christ is examined chronologically through the lens of the New Testament with special attention given to Jesus' words on the cross, the miracle that attended the crucifixion, and the significance of Christ's atoning work. In doing so, MacArthur relives the most awesome injustice in the history of man and the unparalleled triumph of the sovereignty of God.

Publishers Description

The pieces are in place. The curtain rises for the final act. God is about to die.

An unprecedented conspiracy of injustice, cruelty, and religious and political interests sentenced a man guilty of no crimes to the most barbaric method of execution ever devised. The victim was no mere man. Jesus was God in the flesh. The Creator of life "died."

How did such a thing come to be? Who were the onlookers, the players, the fakes, frauds, and heroes? What was it like in the Upper Room that night, in the shadows of Gethsemane, or in the Praetorium awaiting Pilate's verdict? What is the meaning of the last words Jesus uttered as He gasped for breath on the cross? What if all the facts you now so well could come alive in your ind and heart as a living story, rather than as a 2000-year-old ancient account?

By piecing together the narrative from the perspective of the participants, John MacArthur invites you to relive the most awesome injustice in the history of man, the unparalleled triumph of the sovereignty of God, and the passion of Christ.

Shallow Emotionality and Shallow Research  Jan 10, 2007
I honestly wanted to like this study on the passion of Christ, but it was a horrid read. He ignores so much recent forensic science, historical documentation, and spiritual history in his examination of the death of Jesus Christ. He takes every opportunity to attack any liturgical Christian belief, which he constantly places under the heading of 'Catholic', even though all of the Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, and even some Lutheran branches of Christianity hold to these ancient Christian beliefs. (i.e. the Real Presence, the place of Mary in Church history and spirituality, whether Jesus had biological siblings, etc.) This book was basically a repeat of anything in all of Max Lucado's books and a mishmash of what you can get in any church sermon on the subject. Nothing new here. If you want a book on this topic that is actually moving and both historically and scientifically sound, check out "Murder at Golgotha: Revisiting the Most Famous Crime Scene in History". It's much better written and does not appeal to the shallow emotionality that "The Murder of Jesus" relies on.
Hugeness of the Crime (Greatness of His Love)  Apr 15, 2006
'The Murder of Jesus' moves the reader beyond mere belief in the fact of the crucifixion, towards a deeper connection to the "Christ crucified" message we're called to share. Initially, I had reservations about the word "murder" in the title, knowing that despite human responsibility for Christ's death, there is also the predetermined divine side, Jesus willingly laying down his life, being given by God. But MacArthur does note the divine plan, and by focusing on man's murderous injustice, God's love and justice actually end up being magnified. The book synthesizes/harmonizes what the various parts of the Bible say about the crime, putting together and orderly chronicle of the events leading up to the crucifixion. By this approach, the outrageousness of it comes thru more--the number and extent of the trial illegalities, for example. 'The Murder of Jesus' was not at all a pleasant read, but for me it was a must-read. (As for the resurrection, the book doesn't get to that at all, now that'd be a happier read!)
Excellent Book For True Christians and General Public  Feb 3, 2006
This is an excellent book, well written and easy to follow and understand by people from all walks of life. John MacArthur has done a very good job in explaining why Jesus had to be executed. Aside from the theology and Christian reasoning as to why God the Father permitted such execution, MacArthur gets ten stars instead of five when explaining about all of the social injustices, i.e., government corruption, police misconduct, abuse of authority etc., that are currently happening in today's society. Being a federal criminal investigator for over 20 years and having spent a few years as a city cop, and now being involved with my church and being a "man of the cloth" - I agree with MacArthur's views of social injustices from the Old Testament times to our present human condition in society. We are still depraved human beings. I am sure MacArthur is happy knowing that thanks to new DNA technology more and more innocent convicted felons on death row are being freed thanks to DNA showing they were wrongly arrested, indicted and convicted. Thank you Dr. MacArthur for keeping up the good work!

this books gave greater understanding and insite of the death of my Lord. I felt as though my eyes were finally opened into the understanding of what exactly happened when Jesus died for our sins. Read it and feel the wonderful realization!
The power and the gory  Oct 12, 2005
I didn't know that this would be the Gospel According to MacArthur. Was hoping more for an historical perspective on crucifixion. This book would be great for someone searching for an uplifing slant (no pun intented). Simply put, it was just too religious for my tastes.
