Overview
Much Madness Is Divinest Sense, which gets its title from the famous Dickinson poem, is, says Greider, " gateway into the ;poignancy and self-power of the widespread struggle with madness and other forms of emotional anguish." She believes that those who produce accounts of their struggle with "madness" or mental illness of various types, whether in themselves or someone they love, assert on the basis of their experience tht there is sometimes "diviniest sense" in madness-something of ultimate value. This book respectfully engages that assertion and seeks to understand it.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An oasis  Mar 13, 2008
This writer offered so much for me to comtemplate in her sharing the memoirs of those who suffer from mental illness and their families. With my experience in seeking an ease of suffering from mental illness rarely did any avenue offer or address the spiritual needs of sufferers. I observed clergy supporting each other in their own struggles but time and time again, even in mental health facilities complete with beautiful chapels that historically offered spiritual services, those spaces were left inused and ignored. Scheduled church services were cancelled abruptly and my own pastor never visited me as he would have, and did, when I was hospitalized for a physical illness. This is a sensitive and thoughtful portrayal of what can be, and feels, truly divinely inspired in the throws of the extreme symptoms of mental illness. This book provides me with reassurance that others have felt a spiritual message in the madness, a message that remains long after symptoms are managed with chemical and other current interventions and treatments. Many passages caused me to lay the book down and consider the depth and impact of what I had just read. This is a unique work and was well worth the time it took me to digest it.

Memoirs of Powerful Wisdom  Jan 24, 2008
A wonderful, insightful collection of personal stories from people with psychiatric illnesses and their families. Greider gently guides the reader through the difficulties the 'soul sufferers' face as they live through challenging episodes in their lives. Many times I needed to stop and absorb the powerful wisdom shared in these memoirs. 'Much Madness' also has an interesting commentary on our health care system and it's failings for 'soul sufferers'.

A great contribution to the understanding of soul suffering  Dec 8, 2007
In this book Professor Greider seeks to carefully listen to narratives of individuals with severe mental illness. She helps the readers understand what resides within the depth of the souls of these individuals. This book is about deep listening and allowing the lives of these individuals to be our guide in understanding and ways to offer caring. It is very refreshing in contrast to those medical model of pure didactic, advising giving, knowledge imparting based on the study of people as object of their research. In contrast, Professor Greider honors the experiences and wisdom that come from these individuals and seeks the sacred within the lives. It also offers great insights gather from the experiences of the sufferers themselves on the type of caring that hurts and the type that heals. This book is filled with wisdom and should be required for all within the field of mental health.
