Good for moms of young ones  Nov 9, 2009
"Mothering Heights" was a quick read that was enjoyable even if I didn't agree with everything that the authors wrote about. I liked the fact that several classic books were used to glean knowledge from such as Pride and Prejudice, Pilgrim's Progess and several others. The quotes used from the books were very much aligned with the theme of the book, mothering.

Using Scripture Smith and Brereton do back up their writing with Biblical basis - again some of their applications of Scripture were not what I had interpreted them to be but I definitely did find myself gleaning some inspiration from the book. This book was not geared toward moms who homeschool and it does include several mentions of having alone time and how good that is for the mom - one of the things I disagree with - but I can't throw the baby out with the bath water - because overall this book was loaded with uplifting writings to speak to the heart of a mom.

Wether you are a first time mom or a mom three times over this book will have something to speak to your heart. With study questions that can help to see how you view motherhood and your expectations of others, it could be used as a guided Bible study as well. Again it's a fast read which any mom will appreciate and the insight in the book will be well worth the time that it takes to read it.

I recieved this book as a MamaBuzz reviewer and my blog is at An Ohio Reviewing Mom and Growing For Christ.

Mothering Heights  Nov 9, 2009
Since I'm a book lover, I jumped at the chance to review this book. Mothering Heights (a clever spin on Wuthering Heights) uses quotes from classic books to encourage and exhort moms.

The authors encourage moms to find God's direction for their families and to deepen their personal relationship with God-as well as our own families and other moms.

Each chapter is sprinkled with quotes from classic books and discusses various aspects of mothering. There are quotes from moms who shared their experiences and each chapter ends with a set of questions.

I appreciated that this book is full of Scripture. Personally, I felt that it was geared more towards moms of young children, but I still feel it's a good book if you need encouragement or help finding God's direction for your motherin

The Mothering Book for Classic-Loving Moms  Nov 9, 2009
Mothering Heights by Keitha Smith and Susan Crereton has found it's niche on my bookshelf of favorite motherhood books. This is a book that contains though-provoking chapters. Chapters that give me so much food for thought, I could ponder one chapter for several days. I really appreciate that in a book.

The concept that Mothering Heights is built on is intriguing to an avid reader like me. Keitha and Susan took classics such as Pride and Prejudice, Portrait of a Lady, A Room with a View, and Great Expectations and built each of their chapters around the book. Using quotes from the book, they spun their chapter around each thought provoking theme.

For instance, Great Expectations set the stage for a discussion on what our own expectations as mothers are, as well as meeting the expectations of those around us, as we parent our children. My favorite chapter, based on the novel A Room with a View, centered around servanthood, which essentially, is another name for motherhood.

In addition to using quotes from the book, each chapter is also rounded out with verses, which only adds to the depth of the written words.

For those who are not avid readers, and who have not enjoyed classics through the years, this book may be too much for them. It isn't easy reading, though that is not necessarily a drawback. Sometimes we need books that will give us food for thought, and Mothering Heights provides that.

Reach new heights as a mother  Nov 4, 2009
mothering heights is written by mothers for mothers. Even though this book is geared (in my opinion) towards new mothers or mothers of younger children, there are many gems for all mothers inside the cover of this book.

"Our job as mothers is too hard and there is too much at stake to try to be a mother without the power of God in our lives. Therefore, we have a God-given responsibility to find out as much as we can about the Lord and His ways and purposes for our loves."

Each chapter has quotes from a different literary work. For me personally, the quotes didn't really add much value to the book, but others may enjoy the quotes. I appreciated all of the scripture that was included in the book to back up the advice that was given to mothers. A great emphasis was placed on making sure that we were seeking out God's Word for the answers that we need.

Because this book was written with discussion questions at the end of each chapter, it lends itself to a group study. In fact, one chapter is all about how to start a group study. I found myself nodding my head while I read through that chapter as I have been in group settings that had pitfalls due to not following the outlined "keys to success".

Both new and seasoned mothers can use gentle reminders about the importance and value of motherhood. mothering heights gives scriptural based guidance and encouragement in an effort to help mothers achieve all that the Lord has for them in their lives.
