Item Description...
A striking interplay of content and style makes this book-length narrative poem a wrenching, compelling tale. Mose is incarcerated in a Texas prison for a crime whose circumstances slowly unfold as he numbers the days of his sentence and fantasizes about a woman inexorably tied to his fate. As the harshness of prison life begins to close in and distort Mose's consciousness, he is increasingly obsessed with the truth of what happened. In the end, that inquiry reveals to him "another world underneath / this one" where everything "is backwards / to what we want." The journey to that world is a suspenseful and powerful study of a man's character and the trap it sets for him.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Utterly compelling  Dec 12, 2003
MOSE is a terrific narrative poem. I've taught it to several classes of undergraduates, most of whom have not been big fans of poetry, and they have been consistently enthusiastic. Poetry skeptics will be moved by the story's complex and ambiguous blend of love, religion, crime, and loneliness. Poetry lovers will be impressed by Loren Graham's skillful and effective use of language. This book deserves a large audience. (I've also long had the feeling that it would make a good opera.)
A brilliant fusion of theme and form  Oct 3, 2000
This is perhaps the most gripping book of poetry you'll ever read. It's a great place for someone who thinks they don't like poetry to start reading, because it has the pacing and tension of a thriller; it'll make a believer out of the most reluctant of readers. But for people who already love poetry, it offers even more reward: an incredible fusion of the form with the theme. Mose undergoes such severe tests and agonies; everywhere those emotions are echoed in line-breaks, fractured sentences, and a growing sense of loss and Mose's shattering mental state. The structure is incredible; the poems are numbered in the days that remain of Mose's jail sentence, so they grow smaller even as time continues forward, meanwhile in Mose's mind, we move ever backwards towards the crisis that put him where he is. It makes time seem to collapse. This book is astonishing.
