Overview
Asian American women are caught between different worlds. Many grew up sensing that daughters were not as valuable as sons. Family expectations and cultural stereotypes assume that Asian American women can only have certain prescribed roles, as if our worth comes only through what we do for others.

But God has good news for Asian American women. In his eyes, they are his beloved daughters, created for greater purposes than the roles imposed upon us. In this one-of-a-kind book, editors Nikki Toyama and Tracey Gee and a team of Asian American women share how God has redeemed their stories and helped them move beyond cultural and gender constraints. With the help of biblical role models and modern-day mentors, these women have discovered how God works through their ethnic identity, freeing them to use their gifts and empowering them to serve and lead.

The contributors include writers of East Asian heritage (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) as well as Southeast Asian (Filipina) and South Asian (Pakistani). Their diverse perspectives shed light on common threads in the Asian American experience, providing encouragement and guidance to others on the journey.

God has so much more in store for Asian American women than cultural norms, gender roles and old stereotypes of geisha girls or dutiful daughters. Experience the joy and freedom of becoming the Asian American Christian woman God intended you to be.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Voices that need to be heard!   Dec 9, 2006
_More Than Serving Tea_ unveils the Western 'mystique' about Asian American women and shows us what an emerging generation of Asian American Christian women leaders are thinking. The richly textured voices of U.S.-born or raised Asian American women--often silenced in their families and churches--are wonderfully woven into a tapestry of honest stories of pain, struggle, joy and Christian hope. One does not need to be a woman or an Asian American to learn something about faith, discipleship and Asian American Christianity from this landmark book!

admirable women speaking the truth  Nov 18, 2006
I couldn't put this book down! I am an Asian-American Christian woman, and I was constantly surprised at the countless ways that this book spoke to me personally. The stories and insights seemed to echo or explain many aspects of my own life. Things I thought were "just me" turn out to be something I share with many of my sisters.

These amazing women are incredibly vulnerable and honest as they share from their lives to the eternal benefit of complete strangers reading their words! Their teaching and strength are bold and assertive, yet loving and gentle.

I am inspired and empowered by their encouragement and wisdom; my faith is invigorated and renewed! These writings reflect God's love, wisdom, understanding, suffering, pain, comfort, and truth. I believe that "Asian American women (and those who love them)" [from the foreword] will all truly benefit from this book!

Breaking the silence through shared stories and insights  Nov 16, 2006
These are five voices that speak against the silence and begin to fill the void in American culture of authentic Asian American women who share the stories of how their faith, ethnicity, and gender interact and have shaped their lives in both painful and wondrous ways. For those of us who may think we know the stories and the issues, this book will surprise and challenge us - never will we look at a paper crane the same way again!

Racist title  Nov 14, 2006
Why is this book addressing only the Asian side and not the American side of the authors? The title smells racist.

The Gospel doesn't come to remediate only the half of your culture. It works on the whole. Yet "More Than Serving Tea" only addresses the Asian side of these ladies. As if only the Asian side shackles them from relationship, happiness, leadership, etc... and the the Gospel comes to free them from merely serving Tea.

Once again, Christians have hijacked Jesus. This time to justify their own extra-biblical racist repudiation of their Asianess.
