Overview
The decision to follow Christ is not the end of the road but the launch point for a new kind of journey-a journey into the heart of holiness. Too often Christians have thought that obtaining forgiveness from God for our sins was the whole point. Instead, it is the prerequisite for a whole new way of life-the life that God intended when he first placed Adam and Eve in the garden. Author Steve DeNeff takes you on a journey through the life of Jesus and into the heart of holiness. As you discover what it means to be holy, you can- * Experience a genuine change of your heart's desires. * Find in holiness a contentment that sin can't provide. * Discover the freedom to live authentically before God and others. * Rise above disappointment and failure by embracing love over law. * Ignite your passion to bring love and justice to the world. Embrace the life of Christ and let him lead you to the joy of a life of holiness.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Holiness Literature  Nov 21, 2003
. The teaching in this book is excellent. However, it must be read carefully. It is very easy to misunderstand what Steve is trying to say and to jump to conclusions. For instance, another review complains that Steve is calling Jesus a Lord of darkness because Steve compares to Jesus to a black hole in his book.
. However, the point Steve is attempting to make is that our very lives need to revolve around Jesus, just like matter is revolving (and being sucked into) a black hole. Often our lives revolve around our families, our jobs, our church, etc. But holiness is having our life revolve completely around Jesus.
. So, Steve's writing is confrontive and challenges some of the preconcieved ideas the reader might have, but nothing in his writing is un-Christian or non-holiness. Just like the Bible, it can be misinterpreted wrongly by an over-zealous few.
. I really enjoyed reading "More Than Forgiveness." It changed a lot of my misconceptions concerning holiness and challenged me to make sure that all that I am is centered on Jesus. Every holiness preacher should read it and take its teaching to heart. It has made it into a number of my sermons.
. My only complaint (and it is a big one) is that I don't enjoy his writing style. I am a very logical thinker and like to go directly from Point A to Point B. Steve has a tendency to jump around. I found myself confused quite a number of times as I tried to figure out what point he was trying to make. Or even what point he was on. Was he still on the same point or had he jumped back to a previous one without warning me? I had to read chapter two a couple of times before I figured out what he was trying to say. I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if it was structured better so there would be less confusion.
. Other than that, I found the book to be thoroughly Wesleyan and Christ-focused. It should be required reading at Holiness Colleges. In fact, his other book "Whatever Became of Holiness?" was required reading in my Doctrine of Holiness class.
. If someone could rewrite this book in a clear, well-though out manner, it would be worth any price.

Deneff: Jesus Is a Black Hole  Jun 25, 2003
This is one of the most shocking books I have ever read and it bears no relationship to holiness.
Deneff, senior pastor of the College Church at Indiana Wesleyan University, writes that when he was growing up in a parsonage home he mistakenly believed that people were always either/or. They were either saved or unsaved, Christians or sinners, conservative or liberal, sanctified or carnal..These definitions "survived quite nicely," he says, "when the day was simpler. But in today's complicated society, with its Pandora's box questions and sophisticated answers, it is neither efficient nor right for me to reduce all of life into two categories.." P. 57
He continues:
"According to Paul, we were once ungodly sinners but 'have now been justified by his blood...[and] saved from God's wrath ...To Paul, salvation is either in or out, fair or foul, heaven or hell.. Salvation is described as passing from death to life and from darkness to light. People are said to be under God's wrath one moment and children of God the next...
"The good..folk of the last generation..learned to define holiness through the writings of Paul. And while this approach to holiness plays very well inside the epistles of Paul, it does not fit well with the Gospels. And it has caused certain side effects that continue to have a devastating effect on the body of Christ.." P. 61
As for Jesus Himself, Deneff violates everything God has told us about His Son by characterizing Him not as the eternal Light of the World, but as a strange Being of darkness. Unbelievably, he writes the following, after describing a black hole in space:
"Now Jesus is a black hole. And just as a meteorite may orbit a black hole, compelled by it without yet being consumed, so we who love Christ..are always under his influence, pulled into greater depths that seem very different from where we once were, yet still far from Christ himself.." P. 57 "Think of it! The black hole of Jesus is the vestibule of heaven .. For holiness is the love of Jesus. And Jesus is a black hole." P. 80-81
More follows:
"I mean to say that Jesus was truly abnormal." P. 193 "Jesus..believed he was God the same way some people believe they are Jesus. In my city a 'crazy' man went into an adult bookstore and started torching the videotapes. He was arrested carrying his Bible, a twelve-inch knife, and several newspaper clippings. At his arraignment, he claimed to be 'the son of God out to rid the world of pornography.' Many who read the news report were certain the man was insane, even without investigating the case. A judge agreed and ordered a year of psychological treatment. Yet Jesus marched in as the Son of God to rid the Temple of thieves, and we..jump to his defense, even though his claims were more preposterous than those of the lunatic from my city.." P. 190
There is much, much more. It is not our Lord Jesus Christ that Steve Deneff and many other teachers/change agents in churches today speak of, but "another Jesus" -a dark, demented, bumbling "anti-Jesus" who could not have created a single strand of DNA, much less save anyone's soul or take them to Heaven. It is not possible to morph the one into the other.
This book illustrates the tragic falling away of people and churches who once preached God's eternal Word.

More Than Forgiveness  May 11, 2003
This book is most excellent. Pastor DeNeff uses everyday terms in writing about a call to Holy living. DeNeff uses his intellect and personal experiences to throw together what I see as a sermon per chapter. Hearing Pastor DeNeff every Sunday at College Wesleyan Church in Marion, IN, has helped me to grasp some of the ideas in the book a little better though. I give DeNeff 5 stars, its a challenging book with a guide to the way Christ lived his life and the way we should ulitmately live ours. Definately Recommend.
