Item Description...
The year 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Alongside that event, there are many Darwin Day celebrations planned to acknowledge his 200th birthday. Add to these the virulent attacks of the New Atheists, led by Richard Dawkins. Bible-believing Christians will be left increasingly challenged with the theory of evolution as the only model to explain the origins and age of the universe.

Publishers Description
The year 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species." Alongside that event, there are many Darwin Day celebrations planned to acknowledge his 200th birthday. Add to these the virulent attacks of the New Atheists, led by Richard Dawkins. Bible-believing Christians will be left increasingly challenged with the theory of evolution as the only model to explain the origins and age of the universe.
In "More Than a Theory," Hugh Ross, founder and president of Reasons To Believe, offers discerning readers a comprehensive, testable creation model to consider as an alternative. This fascinating resource will educate readers with a direct response to the recent and well-publicized challenges from aggressive atheists. In doing so, it also reminds the scientific community of what constitutes good science. Furthermore, it will supply Christians with the scientific information they need to defend their convictions that the God of the Bible is the Creator.
Complete with several appendices that put common documents and stories to the same test, "More Than a Theory" is a bold, brave, and unapologetic work of apologetics that will stir much discussion in both the scientific and religious realms.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Towards testable science  May 10, 2010
I have read this book as part of the "Officer's Training Course" for Reasons to Believe (RTB). The book outlines four contrasting theories of creation, with the message that three of the models might be held by Christians who believe in the inerrant and infallible Bible, and also who might believe that God reveals himself through nature and the Bible. The book has an important chapter on legal cases, making the point that in the United States, only young-earth creationism has lost in court, and for failing to provide testable science. This point of testable science continues to be an important challenge for the Intelligent Design proponents (as described in a recent issue of Christianity Today).

I do not personally agree with all points in this book, but I believe in its core ideas (and in the core philosophy of RTB). It is a monumental task for any group or organization to provide a publicly critiquable science model. The book itself should be out-of-date as RTB moves forward based on newer evidence. I have provided a detailed critical analysis for this book, presented to the RTB Atlanta group, and posted at [...]

In my slide deck, I take a broader look at the key philosophical proposals made by Hugh Ross and his colleagues at RTB, namely on what basis do communities decide what is good science and what is good theology. RTB contrasts with "Intelligent Design" in explicitly promoting the Christian worldview. I will mention that I recently shared with an atheist that diversity (in science or theology models) is not the fatal blow to Christianity, since orthodox Christians find their unity in Jesus Christ (who claimed exclusive divinity, and communally shares that bond through the Holy Spirit).
Dr. Ross likes his theory more than science  Mar 31, 2010
Rather than offering a scientific method, Hugh Ross lampoons those who disagrees with him, then offers his own model (which he loves BTW). If you're a creationist, it's going to disappoint you for lack of an apologetic and the assumptions of his theory is right. If you're an atheist, it will disappoint you by starting with the Biblical creation account as ground truth and examines data from there - vice putting the Bible on trial and testing it for truth. If your a scientist, it will disappoint because any data or proof is a footnote, not a topic in his book. So it seems no matter what perspective you take, it will a long slog with not much substance in the end. Somehow, a real scientific method got lost in this text. Save yourself a nickel and move on to another book.
Celtic Woman-Songs from the Heart  Mar 29, 2010
"Celtic Woman-Songs from the Heart" is probably one of the best I ever seen of any of their concerts. I have only seen the DVD and many times on TV. They are one of my favorite singing and musical groups. They came to our town not long ago, Albuquerque, NM, but unfortunately was unable to attend the concert. They will continue to be one of my favorite performers. The best thing I like about them other than their music; they seem to portray a sense of purity, cleanliness, and reverence for what they are doing, all of them, singer, musical instrument players, the leader and the whole bunch.
A testable creation model.  Feb 26, 2010
Dr. Hugh Ross has been on the forefront of examining the scientific evidence for the various creation hypothesis both young and old as well as evolutionary theory for a long time. This presentation and defense of a modern testable creation model, constructed over a long time by a great many authentic and reputable scientists and researchers under the umbrella of the Reasons to Believe organization, has powerful explanatory and predictive power and is poised to go head-to-head with current evolutionary models. Regardless of your position, if you have a real interest in this subject, More Than A Theory should generate thoughtful discussion.
More Than a Theory - New approach to an old debate  Jul 29, 2009
More Than a Theory, by astronomer and teacher Hugh Ross, is a book I highly recommend for those interested in Science/Faith issues. Ross is the author of many books and articles, and is the founder of Reasons to Believe (RTB), a science-faith think-tank.

Ross' premise is that the facts of Nature and the words of the Bible are both revelations from God to mankind and that, ultimately, they cannot and will not contradict each other. Science is the study and interpretation of the facts of Nature, while theology is the study and interpretation of the words of the Bible. This is sometimes called the "two books" approach or "dual revelation". All Truth is God's Truth. Ross is an old-earth creationist, generally accepting the geological and cosmological dates of main-stream science. However, he is also an evangelical Christian who takes the Bible seriously and in the sense it was intended. For instance, he believes in a literal first man and women directly created by God and in the progressive, step-wise creation of all life on earth over the "days" of creation. He is also skeptical of the creative power of naturalistic evolution as the driving force behind the full diversity of life on Earth.

In the book, Ross makes the case for using a "testable creation model" (TCM) to study the world around us. Starting from a theistic world-view based on the teachings of the Bible, he lays out a broad model for understanding the world and its origins. This model is compatible with doing research in a modern scientific world, but clearly differs from other models such as: unguided evolution via natural selection, theistic evolution, intelligent design, and young earth creationism.

Christians have often been critized for being just evolution bashers and for failing to put forth a way for their ideas to be tested. The RTB testable creation model is a big step forward. Most notably, Ross uses the TCM to make specific predictions about what we would expect to observe under each competing model and contrasts that with the expectations for RTB's model. He claims that in just a few years (or even months) we should be able to see which models best fit the every growing volume of scientific data.

In the past, science has been primarily defined as the search for truth and understanding of the natural world. Recently, some have tried to exclude God from the process. The main conclusion I drew from reading this book, is that holding to a theistic worldview, such as RTB's, will in no way hinder the search for truth in the realms of science and/or faith. In fact, in many ways it will provide better understanding and approaches. Over the next few years, let's see whose models gain support or lose support.
