Amazing Book  Feb 25, 2009
More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell answers the question "who is Jesus?" McDowell felt that the name of Jesus is something people can get irritated over. Jesus is the Messiah and some people don't want to believe it. McDowell set out to prove that Jesus is the Messiah with the help of scientific and historical evidence, and with the validity of the Bible McDowell does just that.
If you are still searching for Spiritual Enlightenment about God and Jesus in a seemingly hopeless world, May I suggest you read My book as well. (See Above)
Worth Reading  Feb 2, 2009
My first experience with this book came at age eighteen, when I was still a militant atheist with a strong case of egotism and total hatred towards anything and everything. That year I noticed that my roommate had a shelf of apologetic works including "More than a Carpenter" along with Swinburne's "Is There a God" and other recent heavy-hitters. At the time I knew that all Christians were idiots. My roommate was much smarter than I was, but I managed to ignore that. (Cognitive dissonance is an amazing thing.) So I refused to even open this little book, and it vanished from my awareness.

Fast-forward a decade or so and here I am as a convert. Recently I saw this book on a library shelf and decided to have a look. What I found was delightful and encouraging: a quick trip through the evidence for Jesus Christ, with ample references and bibliography. Josh McDowell wrote "More than a Carpenter" over a generation ago, but since the skeptics keep coming back with the same set of arguments, it's highly relevant all the same.

When were the Gospels written? The skeptics will try to push the dates as late as possible, often into the second century. Unfortunately for them, we have found several authentic manuscripts from much earlier. McDowell's survey of real scholarship finds wide agreement that the first gospel was written before 70 A.D. Even liberal, revisionist scholars such as John A. T. Robinson are willing to admit that the entire New Testament was written before that date.

Did Jesus actually claim to be God? Sure he did, says McDowell. See John's Gospel. But why doesn't it say so in the earlier gospels? Is it possible that John made it up after the fact, to bolster credibility? McDowell shows us that the divinity of Jesus is clearly present even in the first gospel, Mark. For those who have studied ancient Jewish law and culture, the issue is clear, particularly at the trial of Jesus.

"More than a Carpenter" is quite short and makes no claim to be thorough. For a serious academic treatise you'll want something more, such as Craig Blomberg's The Historical Reliability of the Gospels. As an introduction, McDowell's book is quite sufficient. For that reason alone, it's a worthwhile book for every Christian home and church.
Mr. McDowell's Kitchen Sink  Jan 31, 2009
I harbor no strong feelings for or against the arguments presented in this book, but I will encourage a balancing act: Read the various critical essays (google "The Jury is In") pertaining to one of Mr. McDowell's other highly influential books, "Evidence That Demands a Verdict", with many ideas similar to the ones presented in "More Than a Carpenter".

In chapter 1, "What makes Jesus so different?", Mr. McDowell asserts "The reason is these others didn't claim to be God, but Jesus did. That is what makes him different from other religious leaders." Assuming Jesus truly made claims of deity, that's quite a presumptuous statement to make, when a relatively effortless search for religious leaders who made similar claims turns up numerous historical references: George Baker (1880 - 1965) aka Father Divine, Hussein Ali's (Baha'Ullah - founder of the Baha'i faith) claim to divine revelation resulted in his death at the conclusion of his 24 year imprisonment, Mirza Ali Muhammad founder of Babism executed in 1850. Read Robert M. Price's 1997 essay, "Jesus--God's Son".

In chapter 4 "Are biblical records reliable", Mr. McDowell would be hard pressed to explain varying accounts of the same events in the Bible. Matthew 27:5 states Judas died by hanging himself. "And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself." Acts 1:18 has a different account of how Judas died "Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." There are numerous other inconsistencies and contradictions that point to the unreliability and fallibility of the gospels. Read James Still's 1999 essay, "Reliability and Belief".

In chapter 10 "Is there some other way", Mr. McDowell never directly addressed why it's not possible to have a relationship with God without Jesus, other than "it says so in the Bible, and therefore, it is so." Mr. McDowell may be sorely disappointed by a June 2008 survey from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life that showed 70% of Americans said they believed religions other than theirs could lead to eternal life. This is in direct contradiction to what Jesus said in the Bible: "I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:6)" When the Evangelicals complained about the lack of clarity of the question, Pew asked the question again in August, and this time, 65% of respondents said all religions could lead to eternal life. Almost half mentioned atheists can go to heaven as well, presumably kicking and screaming.

No doubt, "More than a carpenter" will resonate with Christians who are not firm in their beliefs of the deity and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and perhaps that is Mr. McDowell's intended target audience. For non-believers and believers of other faiths with little knowledge of Christianity, however, this book offers nothing more than a cursory knowledge of Fundamentalist Christianity and a plethora of faulty logic. Mr. McDowell's kitchen-sink approach in presenting evidence to back his arguments fails to deliver.

Apologetics for the 9/11 generation  Oct 10, 2008
Special 9-11 Recovery Edition of McDowell's classic apologetic written 25 years before 9-11 but still as valid as ever. Time (oh, about 2,000 years of it!) has only served to confirm the truth of Jesus's life, ministry, resurrection, and claims to be the one and only Son of God and the awaited Messiah, the Creator, King, Savior, Lord, and Christ.
