Publishers Description

Something's out there...

Reed Shelton organized this survival weekend. Hired the best guide in the region. Meticulously trained, studied, and packed while enouraging his wife, Beck, to do the same. But little did they know that surviving the elements would become the least of their worries. During thier first night of camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the forest. Then someone--no, something--emerges from the dense woods and begins pursuing them. Everything that follows is a blur to Reed--except for the unforgettable image of a huge creature carrying his wife into the darkness. Dependant on the efforts of a small town and a band of friends, Reed knows they have little time to find Beck. Even more important, he soon realizes that they aren't the only ones doing the hunting. Something much faster, more relentless--and definately not human--has begun to hunt them.

Frank Peretti is at the top of his game in this "New York Times" best-selling novel of "survival of the fittest." Nothing is as it first appears in this thriller where things that go bump in the night are only a heartbeat away.

More About Frank E. Peretti

Frank E. Peretti With more than 15 million novels in print, Frank Peretti is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon and has been called “America’s hottest Christian novelist.” The Oath (Word Publishing 1995), sold more than half a million copies within the first six months of release. The Visitation (Word Publishing 1999), was #1 on the CBA Fiction Bestseller list for four months. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1951, Frank is a natural storyteller who, as a youngster in Seattle, regularly gathered the neighborhood children for animated storytelling sessions, drew comics, and tapped out stories on his mother’s portable typewriter.

His journey toward becoming a writer had its side trips. After graduating from high school, he began playing banjo with a local bluegrass group, then worked as a musician and odd-job man for a small recording studio.

Shortly after he and his wife Barbara were married in 1972, Frank toured with a pop band and then a modest Christian music ministry. He later studied English, screen writing and film at UCLA before spending five years helping his father pastor a small Assembly of God church in the Seattle area. During those five years he labored at night, on weekends, any chance he got, to write his first novel, This Present Darkness, the book that would catapult him into the public eye – eventually. Numerous publishers rejected the novel and Frank gave up his pastoring position to work in construction and odd jobs to make ends meet. Even after Crossway Books published This Present Darkness in 1986, the novel sat on store shelves largely unnoticed.

Two years later, Frank was working at a local ski factory when word-of- mouth enthusiasm finally lifted This Present Darkness onto a tidal wave of interest in spiritual warfare. The book appeared on Bookstore Journal’s bestseller list every month for more than eight years. His two spiritual warfare novels, This Present Darkness (1986) and Piercing the Darkness (1989), captivated readers, together selling more than 3.5 million copies. The Oath was awarded the 1996 Gold Medallion Award for best fiction.

For kids, Frank wrote The Cooper Kids Adventure Series (Crossway and Tommy Nelson), which remains a best-selling series for children with sales exceeding 1 million copies. In August 2000, Peretti released the hilarious children’s audiocassette series titled Wild and Wacky Totally True Bible Stories, reprising his role as Mr. Henry, the offbeat substitute Sunday School teacher found in two Visual Bible for Kids videos. In 2000, Frank released his first-ever non-fiction book, The Wounded Spirit, in which he deals with the problem of bullying.

In all, including his current work, Illusion, Frank has written nineteen books of various size for various ages.

Frank and Barbara live a simple life in rural Idaho. He leads worship at their church, Barbara paints in watercolor, and they enjoy being with their close friends.

Frank E. Peretti has published or released items in the following series...

Christian Horror At Its Best  Oct 18, 2008
People are being killed by a creature, which is covered up and blamed on bears in a novel by Frank Peretti. Am I talking about "Oath"?

Fortunately, the similarities to my least favorite Peretti novel end there (though I may be alone). While both fit into being horror, they are two different books. "Oath" is more of an allegory, while "Monster" fits more into science fiction.

I won't spoil any of the surprises, but it is a good story. There are very effective twists that may surprise you.

Some question the "intelligent design" aspect. To be honest, I think some people who believe in evolution refuse to be as open-minded as a true scientist should be. I doubt this novel will change the minds of many, but I have two comments:

1. It does bring up a weakness of evolution -- I won't tell you what it is because it will spoil the story, but it is clear what that weakness is by the time you finish.

2. Do you have to agree with the point of view to enjoy a novel? I enjoyed the novel Jurassic Park and the first and third movies of the series even though I disagree with their perspective. Can the other be done as well?

This is a good novel, and to me, the most positive of his novels since the darkness series.

I've read this book before in hard back, it was so good I got it in paperback so I could read it again and share it with others.
Awful Narration!!!  Aug 30, 2008
I've just started listening to the audio version of this book. But I have to say - the author should NEVER EVER EVER EVER read another book. His voice is distracting. He sounds bizarre and almost like a cartoon character voice. I have started and stopped this book 3 times now because I honestly can not stand to hear his voice. Thankfully, I have the abridged version, so when I finally do finish it, it won't be too long. But really - with a voice that awful, how could he have thought to read the book?!?!
Bigfoot Abduction..  Aug 14, 2008
I thought the story started of really well. We got to meet and understand the characters and know how their relationship worked. Plus the chase scene and inital abduction was really scary. But shortly after we find out Beck was abducted by a Bigfoot. The rest of the story is about how her husband Reed is trying to track her down with the help of some local people. It was an ok story, some parts were pretty boring and I had to push through them but overall pretty good.

I LOVE PERETTI - just not this book. Monster was the first Peretti book I ever read. And needless to say, a long time went by before I decided to read another Peretti book. Thank goodness I gave him another chance. I have become a Peretti fan but have to say this book is my least favorite. Monster is not up to Peretti's style. I found it a wasted read.
