Item Description...
George Roche writes, "Gene Edward Veith argues forcefully that fascism is alive and well in our secular, postmodern age. He makes an eloquent plea for a return to traditional conservatism--spiritual values, free market economics, and democratic republicanism--as the best defense."

Publishers Description
This book explores the fascist influences that continue to permeate modern culture and thought. Through a skillful combination of historical narrative, cultural criticism and theological analysis, the author demonstrates how fascism, perhaps unknowingly, affects our thinking. The author also offers guidance and hope for those shaken by ideological crosscurrents as he convincingly demonstrates that Christian theology does not stifle the truth.

Interesting perspective on the consequences of ideas  Mar 24, 2008
This was a well done exposition of the links between postmodern thought and facism. It describes how some of the ideas of facists supporting the Nazis (such as Ezra Pound and Martin Heidegger) are now eminating from the university in postmodernism, and how these ideas lead to totalitarianism. It confronts the anti-transcendant, inherently irrational, and relative utilitarian ethical foundations of such lines of thought as postmodernism, existentialism, deconstrution and the avante guarde, and details the inevitable and disasterous consequences when these academic speculations are put in to practice in the real world. A short pithy read for anyone interested in postmodernism and its place in history. Veith is an excellent writer and social analyst whose books are generally short, dense and thought provoking.
Very insightful; Very Disturbing  May 17, 2007
Delves into the intellectual roots to modern fascism and then relates them to our current postmodern context. This is a insightful yet disturbing book.
A little too good....  Jun 10, 2003
Veith's "Modern Fascism" is essentially a primer on the philosophy of fascism. He shows the ideas that converge to form the ideological basis for fascism are still alive today in academia, especially in postmodernism. In this respect it is brilliant. In fact, his discussion of the philosophy of fascism is so moving that it is hard to keep from felling some affinity towards this philosophy. Veith also does little to tell us why these ideas are bad, other than they were used by fascists to do bad things. He argues for a return to Judeao-Christianity, but ignores the fact that this philosophy has been put to bad uses as well. This is why I give him 4 stars only. As a primer on the philosophy of fascism, the book is genius, and very powerful. As a revolt against these ideas in modern thought, the book is subpar. I still recommend it to everyone in social science. If nothing else you can use it to point out the fascist tendencies in people's thought, and see the shock on their face. Good fun, and useful.
Fascism as Neo-Paganism  Jun 6, 2002
Most academic work on fascism concentrates on its political aspects. This book reveals fascism as neo-paganism, a worship of Nature and Power. As such it is highly relevant to our time. I can recommend it.

There are a few flaws, however. It focuses on Nazi Germany almost to the exclusion of fascist movements elsewhere, and fails to draw an adequate distinction between the unitary ideology of pure Nazism and the syncretic syndicalist nature of Italian and European fascism. It also fails adequately to observe that the neo-pagan myths of fascism can idolise collectives both smaller than the nation (tribalism) and wider (europeanism, globalism, environmentalism), as well as sub-cultures within a society (feminism, homosexualism); consequently, the political forms that fascism takes can be more diverse than perhaps the author realises, and in particular are not necessarily nationalistic (an international fascism was present from the outset, especially in France). It would also have benefited from a clearer distinction between paganism and neo-paganism; the latter being not simply a new variety of the former, but a nostalgia for what paganism is falsely believed to have been; as such neo-paganism is very old invention, going all the way back to Aaron and the Golden Calf. True pagans were genuinely ignorant, making the best of a bad job; neo-pagans have always been people who ought to have known better.

Outstanding Examination of a Godless Worldview  Mar 6, 2002
Veith consistently produces excellent books, essays, and articles but this is near the top of all he's written. In examining the Fascist mind-set, he builds a case that much of modern "liberalism" is actually repackaged Fascism. Doubtless many will be upset or offended by his claims, but they are difficult to refute.

In addition to tracing the history of Fascism and demonstrating many of its excesses, Veith also shows means of combatting its intrusion into modern thought and life. In so doing, he also establishes Fascist links to Postmodernism. For those interested in the historical aspects of Fascism, especially the alleged Martin Luther connection to Hitler and Nazi thought, I also recommend Uwe Siemon-Netto's The Fabricated Luther : The Rise and Fall of the Shirer Myth.
