Item Description...
When Maggie, an old flame, asks FBI agent Jack O'Connor for help, he recruits private investigator Allie Fortune to aid in his investigations, but it soon becomes apparent that Maggie is not telling them everything that she knows.

Publishers Description
This series takes place in the 1940's, and the motivating factor is the relationship of the main character, Allie Fortune, with a man who may or may not be dead. She fell in love with him before he went off to fight in WWII, and perhaps even worse, before she realized she loved him. Now he has disappeared and she can't move on with her life, romantically at least. Meanwhile, she has become a private investigator and has developed a stellar reputation in the business.
As "Miss Fortune" came to an end, Allie had learned that her old flame was indeed still alive but missing, somewhere in Europe. Meanwhile, she has become good friends with an attractive, single FBI agent (Jack O'Connor), complicating the situation.
Jack O'Connor receives a letter from Maggie, a woman he used to love, saying she's in trouble in Berlin. The FBI refuses to get involved, so Jack asks Allie Fortune to help him investigate. Allie and Jack pose as a missionary couple who want to bring orphans back to the United States. A child finds important documents that everyone in the city--Soviets and allies alike--want for themselves. Maggie refuses to tell Jack what the documents are, saying if things go wrong, they are better off not knowing. Through the course of the search, Allie's past is brought back to her, half a world away from home.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Absolutely loved it - hoping for a 3rd book!  Feb 25, 2010
In many ways, not much has changed in Allie Fortune's life since she met FBI agent Jack O'Connor and they partnered together to successfully close a major case. She's still the only female private investigator in New York City, still has tense dinners with her parents every Wednesday night, and she's till searching for her lost love David Rubeneski, missing in action since the end of the war. When Jack calls asking for her help, she knows the situation is serious - Maggie, the woman who turned him down years before, has written from divided Berlin needing help. Armed with only a cryptic letter and no idea of the danger Maggie is in, Allie and Jack travel to Berlin determined to save her life. But Allie has a side mission to complete - her mother has charged her with finding a priest in the war-ravaged city and delivering a mysterious gift. Between her mother's request and the threats closing in around Maggie and her secrets, Allie is shocked when the current investigation rips open old wounds from her own past. With more than her life and the lives of her friends at stake, Allie must navigate the dangerous world of international espionage if she's to have a chance to lay the past to rest and move on with her life.

The best way I can describe Sara Mills' writing is that it's like film noir on the page. I've been on a film noir viewing kick lately, and watching classics like Laura, I Wake Up Screaming, and The Dark Corner proved to be perfect viewing complements to Sara's rich, atmospheric storytelling. The way past and present collide in Miss Match is one of the novel's greatest strengths. I love how Mills takes each character's secrets and forces them to confront their fears in the light of present danger. Allie is as smart and engaging as she was in her debut, but since meeting Jack, a guy who genuinely values her friendship and her rather unorthodox job skill set, she's begun to open up. Kudos to Mills for creating such a fantastic investigative team in Allie and Jack - theirs is a genuine, rewarding friendship based on mutual respect and understanding. But emotional risk and self-reflective moments are not always welcome or easy to endure, as proven when Allie discovers a shocking secret about her mother's past that forces her to re-evaluate her own character and prejudices.

Miss Match is the perfect blend of post-war intrigue and mystery, the ideal read for anyone who appreciates the tone and storytelling style of classic film noir. A page-turning tale mystery, faith, and second chances, I only hope that one day not too far in the future we'll get a third Allie Fortune mystery to continue Miss Match's KILLER cliffhanger.
Even Better than the First Book  Sep 14, 2009
I enjoyed the first book so much that I went straight to get this one. It didn't dissapoint!! The only problem is that it left me wanting more. When is the 3rd book going to be out!!! :)
Definitely not a . . . Miss Match  Aug 28, 2009
The second and, unfortunately for now, final book in the Allie Fortune Mystery Series by Sara Mills leaves us at just the place we wanted to be. Finally. And that's the end.

Miss Match takes Allie Fortune, Private Investigator, and Special Agent Jack O'Connor on a treacherous journey to postwar Berlin in an unlikely liaison to rescue Maggie O'Shayne, Jack's one true love, after he receives two vague letters pleading for help from the woman who left him behind after his marriage proposal and headed into the military to practice her nursing career.

Able to procure a false passport for Jack as her husband, Allie and Jack head to the remnants of a bombed out Berlin with papers from an adoption ministry to return with eight orphans. The plan comes together fast and loose and extremely dangerous for Jack since if his true identity is discovered, he could be held for treason. Allie initially tries to discourage his determined decision to rescue Maggie, suggesting she might not be the woman he thinks she is, but there will be no denying his departure so Allie puts together the scheme.

An unusual twist involving Allie's difficult relationship with her mother provides a different peak into her mother's heart so many years ago in Berlin. Once there we can almost see the broken and erupted concrete streets, the buildings sheered in half--many ready to collapse--the hunger pangs of so many people who stand in line only to find that the available food disappears before they get any, the cold that bites to the bone without the refuge of fireplaces or furnaces.

There's a surprise waiting with Maggie and a frightening secret which has kept her in hiding. When she must finally reveal the knowledge which has left her a hunted woman, a horrible event causes Jack to form a daring plan which could be fatal to all of them if it doesn't work. At the conclusion of the plan, Allie separates from them in order to pursue what has held her captive and inert for eight long years.

An inventive story which is told primarily in first person via Allie's POV, it does shift to give the reader a glimpse of Maggie's back story, present feelings for Jack, their circumstances, and the permeating fear which surrounds their hopes of escape. Told in a slightly different style than Miss Fortune, the disjointed story and different POVs somehow accentuate the brokenness of lives subjected to the physical and political aspects of war.

Sara's writing and interesting stories told through her adventurous, gutsy, and devoted private investigator heroine who, like Jack, has never gotten past her first love, certainly deserve an audience. If you enjoy period mysteries with a unique and oddly endearing heroine, please buy these two novels by Sara Mills (Miss Fortune, Miss Match). They're worthy of shelf space, and it's disappointing to learn the third novel in the series has not been printed.

Good second novel in the series  Aug 23, 2009
Miss Match is the second book in the Allie Fortune series by Sara Mills and lives up to the writing standards set in the first novel.

In 1947 New York, Allie has established herself as a P.I. in a man's world. Her next case, though, will take her out of the country and into war-torn Berlin. Jack O'Conner, an FBI agent she partnered with on a previous case, has received some cryptic letters from his childhood sweetheart. Maggie O'Shayne is a nurse working in Berlin, a dangerous place to be after WWII. She's asking Jack to come because she believes her life and the life of her daughter are in danger.

Jack is in a difficult position. As an FBI agent, he can't take an unauthorized trip to Berlin. Divided up between the Allies and the Soviet Union, the Cold War between the US and the Soviets has spilled into Berlin. An American government agent traveling to that city would be arrested and charged with treason.

Allie has difficulty convincing him that going to Berlin right away isn't a good idea; she convinces him to give her time to come up with an alternate plan. Allie understands Jack's emotions; she's been searching for her own lost love for the last 8 years.

Arrival in Berlin puts them in a society that is in survival mode and is unforgiving to anyone that doesn't know the survival rules. Getting into Berlin was the easy part; getting back out may be beyond their capabilities.

The book continues to explore the relationships established in the first and the tenuous relationship between Allie and her mother takes a really unexpected, but intriguing twist.

Unbelievable  Aug 16, 2009
Okay, I know this is fiction, but the plot line is just too chock full of unbelievable twists, such as the detective's ability to quickly "come up with" fake passports, the travels through occupied Germany, her rescue of her long-lost love, that just happen without any (or much) explanation. The business with the mother using the heirloom wedding veil as a tablecloth is just silly. Finally, this seems to be a novel set in New York City written by someone who has never set foot in the city nor done a bit of research on the city in the late 40ies to give the novel some local color.
