Item Description...
In 1947 Allie Fortune is the only female private investigator in New York City, but she's kept awake at night by a mystery of her own: her fianci disappeared in the war and no one knows if he's still alive. Until Allie finds out, she will have no peace. When there's a knock on her office door at four in the morning, Allie suspects trouble as usual, and Mary Gordon is no exception. Mary claims someone is following her, that her apartment has been ransacked, and that she's been shot at, but she has no idea why any of this is happening. Allie takes the case, and in the process discovers an international mystery that puts her own life in danger.
Meanwhile, the FBI is working the case as well, and she is partnered up with an attractive, single agent who would be perfect for her under other circumstances-if only she knew whether her fianci was still alive.

Publishers Description
They call her the "P.I. Princess." It's 1947 and Allie Fortune is the only female (and probably the best) private investigator in New York City. Her work is a welcome distraction from her own past, and she's just been hired on by a client who isn't telling the whole truth. Mary Gordon's claims of innocence don't fit with her ransacked apartment, being shot at, and the two Soviet agents hot on her trail.
Meanwhile, the FBI is working the case because a legendary and mysterious treasure has gone missing...again. The only catch for Allie is her new "partner" Jack, an attractive, single agent who knows how to make her smile. As Allie and Jack chase after the gold, they must contend with the Soviets, who also want the priceless treasure back--after all, they stole it fair and square.

Enjoyable read, clever mystery  Apr 7, 2010
"Miss Fortune" is an enjoyable historical mystery/suspense novel set in 1947 in New York City. It was fast-paced and had a clever mystery that kept me guessing until the end. In general, the world-building was very good and the historical detail nicely mixed into the action. The characters were fun and interesting though they didn't quite strike me as realistic. Also, one of Allie's (and Jack's) actions at the end didn't make a lot of sense and was never really explained. It seemed done solely so the bad guy could explain everything he'd done. It was a funny scene, though.

About a third of the book was flash-backs to how she met her now-missing boyfriend and shows why she's so attached to him. Despite this background, I was a little irritated by Allie's inability to love anyone except her missing boyfriend--though her feeling of guilt did make it somewhat more realistic.

There was a major historical mistake that was critical to the story (though I doubt most readers will care). Allie was in a car that crashed at high speed, and she should have died...except she had a seat belt on. But seat belts weren't even invented yet.

Most of the novel had no religious content. Allie rejected God because He let her boyfriend disappear from her life. However, after encountering a Christian woman who'd just lost her son to murder, Allie started thinking about praying again and about what the woman had (briefly) said about God. I'm not sure if non-Christians would be bothered by this content or not.

There was no sex, and I don't recall any bad language. The mystery was a good one, and I'd recommend this novel as enjoyable, clean reading.

Miss Fortune Is a Good Light Read  Jul 18, 2009
Miss Fortune is a very good light mystery/romance/mildly inspirational volume. I did not pick the book up looking for a cliff hanger to keep me on the edge of my seat. I chose this book because I liked the cover and thought I would enjoy reading it. I did.

The book's main plot centers around a gold collection believed to have belonged to Helen of Troy that was stolen (by several people) during WWII. The gold has ended up in America and our heroine (Allie Fortune) ends up on the trail of it along with a handsome FBI agent and a host of other characters.

A really great subplot rotates into the book in the form of Allie's reflections. Occasionally (and these sections are marked by a different font), Allie will reflect back on a man she fell in love with before the War. She isn't sure if he is dead or alive throughout the course of the book. As Allie struggles with these feelings she also finds herself reflecting on the lack of spiritual faith she feels in her life, and she tries to find a resolution within the pages.

There is a good deal of entertainment within the pages of this book for the reader looking for an evening's diversion.

Mystery novel that is mysterious up to the end  May 13, 2009
Miss Fortune (Allie Fortune Mystery Series, Book 1)

It's 2:30am on August 8,1947 in New York City and the "P.I. Princess", aka Allie Fortune, private investigator, can't sleep. It isn't a case that's keeping her awake, but a file on her desk that may contain information about her fiance, David Rubeneski, declared "missing" in World War II. After fulfilling her need to know, she prepares to catch a few hours of sleep on her office couch.

Pounding on the door nixes that idea. When Allie opens it and allows Mary Gordon to enter, she takes on a case that grows by the day and involves the agents, some friendly others not, from the US, East Germany and Russia. All are intent on the same thing--retrieving the stolen war treasure that Mary is believed to have in her possession--some anyway they must.

Along the way, Allie picks up a partner, FBI special agent Jack O'Conner. Not only does he have information on the current case, but he may hold clues to David's fate.

Sara Mills' has constructed a well-written novel. The characters are well-rounded and engaging. The writing is fast-paced, but not so fast that details get left in the dust. The book's twists and turns kept me guessing throughout the book, from first page to last. I look forward to reading the second book in the series, Miss Match (Allie Fortune Mystery Series, Book 2)
