Reviews - What do our customers think?
A little less than OK  Jun 17, 2009
This book is an attempt at brainwashing therapy. I guess, for those who desperately need it, they may find an outlet in this book. I enjoyed the concept of turning duty into an act of love, however, everything else was rather stupid.
Watch out for Dogma  Apr 7, 2009
The quaint, sweet tone of this book belies the subtle, often anti-intellectual approach to parenting. Several digs at Darwin that illustrate the author's rejection and ignorance of what science relies on to advance medicine. I accept and appreciate the pro-Christian messaging in the book - Olivia Bruner is entitled to believe what she likes, but you as a reader should know before purchasing this book this: while it attempts to nurture young parents, this book encourages smallness of thought, how to ensure your children will share in that closed-mindedness and dwelling on failures as a parent by praying over a list of them. All questions have answers, and you can be sure that the answers are neither enlightened or rational.

This is not to say there are no good messages or ideas in this text. Some of the moments when the family prays or discusses are clearly tender, important family moments that will serve those children well in life. The life lessons - though a bit forced - are valuable and probably effective. On the other hand, rejecting what is perhaps the most critical set of information (aside for them bible) for advancing our culture, our nation and for realizing both God's will and for advancing secular good is not a message I would care to share with my wife and family. Understanding evolution is a crucial part of how we can make the human condition better. And amusingly, many of the mini-stories actually undermine her very message. Witness her Mini-hurts story with it's allegory about the son who is not picked and her follow-up in the next chapter where he daughter picks a favorite stuffed animal. Later she even mentions that her children have inherited tendencies, which is a concept strait our of the Origin of Species. In fact, the Christian Monk Mendelssohn discovered and described for the first time inherited traits being passed from generation to generation. Darwin did not disagree with the United States Constitution, as the "What if?" section would lead you to believe. Natural selection is not about equality, it's about suitability. "Science can neither prove nor disprove spiritual equality -- a defect in a scientific theory, but a blessing in a religious doctrine." (Steve Sailor, National Post) Many scientists have proved and improved upon the theory - the mechanism for passing on traits was proven 40 years ago by Watson & Crick who made discoveries about the structure of DNA which too have led to improvements in our medicine and our understanding of how we are the way we are.

Raise children the way you want to share your values. This book will help you to raise well behaved, considerate Christian children. But if your values include disrespect for science and an unwillingness to learn, you can be certain that your children will not be a part of advancing and bettering our world and their own effectiveness in life. They will be part of the ignorance that resisted such perceived evils as inoculation, vaccines, forensics to name just a few beneficial but initial rejected scientific discoveries.
It's time to make sure that religion and science exist in harmony. The sciences complement our ability to live well and serve. They afford our children the ability to make the world a better, more fair and equal place for all.
