Overview
"My life must be filled with the love of Jesus, and also with a great outpouring of goodness and sacrifice for individuals and for the whole world." -from Chapter Seven The world loved Pope John XXIII-who could resist his cheerful, affectionate nature?-and he admitted that he was incorrigibly optimistic: "I never met a pessimist who accomplished any good," he wrote in his diary. But Pope John was at heart nothing more than a man in love with God. He maintained his good humor in spite of decades of difficult assignments and considerable ill treatment, never complaining but instead choosing to "seize the good...and multiply it." If you're looking for a big-hearted friend within the communion of saints, Blessed John XXIII is your man. This lively portrait will sweep you into the warmth of his spirit while anchoring you in his solid, practical spirituality. "Never mind thunderbolts from heaven!" he once said. "Charity, charity and simple, direct, loving truth!"

Meet John XXIII -- an inspiring and informative biography  Nov 8, 2009
Pope John XXIII caught my imagination during his time as "Papa" in the 'chair of Peter.' His insistence on going out on Christmas day to say mass for prisoners in the local jail; his marrying a young peasant couple because they asked; his 'opening the windows' to let fresh air into the Church; his prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit at the beginning of the second Vatican Council, as a "New Pentecost all intrigued me. When I visited Rome in 1975, ten years after his death, the only 2 things I bought myself were a lovely mosaic, red and green, 'Christmas cross" and a 3" statue of the familiar, well-loved, rotund "Papa" John XXIII.
Reading Patricia Treece's account of his life and heart were a blessing to me. I cried, I laughed, I prayed, and not much moves me this way. This book brought my beloved "Papa" right into my room. The authors sources were more far ranging and more personal than I had encountered before. This bookMeet John XXIII: Joyful Pope and Father to All brought me back to an earlier fervor which had faded.
I hope that you find this book to be the blessing that I did.

To Know Him Is To Love Him  Feb 2, 2009
Author Patricia Treece describes her biography of Pope John XXIII as the story of "a steady progression in holiness across a long lifetime," That lifetime includes convening the Second Vatican Council, and "calling the world back from the brink of disaster" during the 1961 Cuban missile crisis. Treece portrays Angelo Roncalli, born in 1881 and elected pope in 1958, as "a delightful human being" whose style was a model for interreligious and interdenominational dialogue. Those themes are followed throughout the work, which reveals, step by step, Roncalli's career path from seminary to papacy. The man was a workhorse. In his first major assignment as a priest he became secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo. In that position, Roncalli collaborated with his bishop, handled scheduling, preached, traveled, wrote articles, and taught seminary courses.

Later he served as a chaplain for wounded soldiers in World War I, spiritual director of a seminary, and Italian president for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. After being named an archbishop in 1925 Roncalli embarked on what Treece calls the "Bulgarian exile." During his 10 years in that heavily Orthodox country, Treece writes, Roncalli learned to be "like those Old Testament heroes who walked, praising God, in the furnace." That experience and assignments in Greece, Turkey, and post-war France helped the future pope hone his diplomatic skills and gain trust and respect from those with whom he worked. The ecumenical aspects of those years seem to have laid the groundwork for the Second Vatican Council, which Roncalli called shortly after he was elected pope in.

All 16 chapters of Meet John XXIII interweave history with rich personal vignettes highlighting Roncalli's love of God, charm, and humility. In her chapter on the council, Treece reminds us of John XXIII's longtime interest in bringing the Church to people "in a changing human society" and promoting unity among Christians. The inner workings of the council and its results are not treated here. Rather, Treece maintains her focus on the pope's role in assembling the participants and observers, setting the agenda, and stepping back to allow the Holy Spirit to guide the proceedings.

Meet John XXIII is an outstanding portrait that fulfills Treece's opening prediction: "To know him is to love him."

A saint for discouraging times  Nov 6, 2008
I received a free copy of this book to review for my radio program,
Faith, Hope and Action. I get quite a few books but when I saw this one come in with Patricia Treece as the author.. I knew it would be a winner. AND of course it is. AND it is just what I needed to pick me up out of a sort of spiritual pity party I was holding.

Pope John XXIII was such a remarkable person.. but what shows through so beautifully in this book, is his warm, loving and compassionate nature. He was just plain lovable and loving. That is the essence of all sanctity I think.

I love this description he gave of the role of the Church as it is led by different Church leaders when someone complained to him that it was being led poorly.

"Each man has his style, and no man is perfect in every area. Had Christ wanted perfection in the running of the Church, he would have stayed and run it himself."

Isn't that great? The rest of the book is great too. Very easy to read and very enjoyable and inspirational. I still have a couple chapters to go... but a wonderful, wonderful book about a wonderful pope.

Uplifting  Oct 25, 2008
This book is not a definitive biography of John XXIII, but it is a revealing look, although brief, into an extremely poignant saintly person. To be honest, I was turned off reading anything about John by Thomas Cahill's Book on John XXIII. It portrayed him as aloof and dimwitted. I think the true John XXIII story is this one. Now I want to read more about this remarkable man.

His entire life was one of humility. That would define Cahill's definition of aloofness. He was also considered naive by his contemporaries including Benedict XV. This saintly humility and naivete' was his love of humanity by not criticizing his enemies. He would "go the road of the saints" in his daily life including those who wanted him to fail. In the end John was the victor. He saw that the church was in need to be renewed, but his plan was not to change the church for the worse but to renew it in the Holy Spirit. It has taken over 40 years for the true John to come out into the world. Like most saintly people, the truth almost never comes to be known until someone notices and writes a great book.
