Item Description...
Nine-year-old Addy Walker escapes from a cruel life of slavery to freedom during the Civil War

Publishers Description
Addy Walker's family is planning a dangerous escape
from slavery in the summer of 1864. But before they can make the escape, the worst happens--Master Stevens decides to sell some of his slaves, including Poppa and Addy's brother, Sam. Addy and Momma take the terrible risk of escaping by themselves, hoping that the family eventually will be together again in Philadelphia. Set during America's own struggle over slavery, the Civil War, Addy's story is one of great courage and love--love of family and love of freedom.

Wonderful  Mar 26, 2008
I read this book with my daughter when she was 9 yrs old. We both enjoyed this book and it was written in a simple format that was easy for her to understand the concept of slavery from a little girl named Addy who also was 9 yrs old during that time.
American Girl  Jan 13, 2008
As part of a Civil War Unit, this book is one of the American Girls Collection. This book is about slavery, looking through the eyes of a young girl. Students may find this book interesting, with its beautiful drawings and real photographs. This book looks like a positive way to teach history.
An Adventure By: EG from North Boulevard  Dec 6, 2007

The book I am reviewing is Meet Addy, by Connie Porter part of the American Girl series. I think this book deserves four stars. It's a terrific book because it has a good layout but, it could be a little bit more descriptive. This book is about a slave girl named Addy. This problem occurs in this story when her Poppa and brother Sam are sold to another master. The problem is solved when Momma and Addy run away. I recommend this book to girls who like history. I would not recommend this book to boys they would think it is boring. Other books by this author you might like are Addy Learns a Lesson and Happy Birthday Addy.

A Brave Girl...Nakaissia's Review  Sep 25, 2004
It was an exciting story. I wanted to read it a lot. It was brave of her to keep her feelings inside and try to help her family to get to freedom. I am glad that she made it through, because I'm not sure I would have. I recommend this book for girls and boys, and even adults, as it's really good.
