A Bitter Conflict Rages Between Two Brothers...And a Noblewoman Holds the Key to Their Future

Philip de Tollard, the illegitimate son of a powerful English lord, is sheltered by his father but given no claim to an inheritance. Gareth, the legitimate son, is cruel and abusive to his stepbrother. When their father suddenly dies, Gareth falsely accuses Philip, and he escapes only with his life to begin wandering as a fugitive and mercenary.

Philip and his longtime friend Beatrice have come to love each other, and she awaits his return, fervently hoping circumstances will change. But when she finds herself at the mercy of Gareth, who will stop at nothing to acquire her estate, she strikes a most grievous bargain.

Bitter and angry, Philip devises a dangerous plan for vengeance. But love and hate both have consequences, and he must face the truth that God will not be ignored.

A masterful saga of love lost?and found?and a remarkable redemption

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not one of my favs  Mar 2, 2007
I really didn't like this book. I didn't feel there was much of a religious background in it and I bought it at a Christian Bookstore! I wasn't left wanted to read more by this author which was dissapointing. I may try another book by the same author but I will get it from the library instead of paying for it this time. I don't even want to let anyone borrow this book after reading it, I just feel that it wasn't good at all......the story wasn't about God at all.
Carries the Reader Through Many Trials of Life  Sep 6, 2006
Set in the days of noblemen and knights and servants and peasants, Philip de Tollard has no place. His dad was a nobleman who was lord of the Hawken Manor and for reasons Philip didn't understand, his father could not acknowledge the birth of his eldest son.

Philip spent much of his youth with his mother and her family until she died. Once she was gone, her family, disgraced by the scandal his birth had caused called on his father for support. Though his father couldn't outwardly claim Philip as his son, he did manage to send him to the finest schools.

At school, Philip never fit in. There were those who knew of his less than desirable birth conditions and picked fights with him whenever they could. Eventually, Philip was kicked out of school because of his fighting.

His father arranged for him to work as a groom at the stables of an estate close to his own and that's where Philip met Beatrice. She was the only child of the Lord of Cassley, the estate that Hawken has wanted for years.

Philip did not know the depths of his younger half-brother Gareth's jealousy nor Lady Hawken's capacity for revenge and hate until he fell in love and needed a portion of what was rightly his in order to marry her. When he approached his elderly father to ask for a small parcel of land in which to build a family, he had no idea if his father would grant his request or how much it would cost him in the end. Between the two brothers, Philip thought Gareth had everything but Gareth knew Philip had the only thing worth having.

The Mark of the Cross makes us thankful to live in a free society where riches and land no longer determine a man's worth. Philip also shows how the truth prevails no matter the consequences we must face a long the way.
For those fascinated with medieval history  Aug 10, 2006
Expelled from Oxford, Philip de Tollard, the illegitimate son of Lord Hawken, takes a position as groom in the stables of a minor baron and falls in love with the baron's daughter, Beatrice. Gareth, Philip's half-brother, is determined to outrank Philip in every way, whether in swordplay, their father's love, or Beatrice's heart.

When Lord Hawken dies suddenly, Gareth accuses Philip, who barely manages to escape England with his life. Philip's quick temper threatens to be the end of him in Paris, until a band of thieves take him in. Still loving Philip, Beatrice agrees to an arranged marriage to a friend of her father's. Then a rebellion in England places her in Gareth's power, and she must make an awful choice.

Building slowly, this trying-to-be-an-epic love story pulls readers through significant events in medieval history, including the Crusades. Plot twists are numerous, but suspense lags as the book continues. Detailed characters grasp tenuously at the reader's sympathy and eventually lose it with unwise choices. An example is the inclusion of some sensuous material, which makes the book inappropriate for teens. Women fascinated with this period of history may want to give it a try. - Katie Hart, Christian Book [...].
A Detailed Journey into the 13th Century and a Haunting Love Story  May 19, 2006
Set in the turbulent 13th Century, this sprawling epic tale of love lost and redeemed takes the reader from England to France and into the Holy Land where the great Crusades were taking place. Philip de Tolard is the [...]son of a powerful English lord. His half-brother and legitimate heir, Gareth, is truly villainous. He murders their father in a fit of rage when he learns that their father had decided to bequeath Philip his rightful share of his holdings. Gareth's cold-blooded mother, Clarise, helps him to pin the blame on Philip, and Philip is forced to flee England, a proscribed murderer. Philip and Beatrice are childhood sweethearts, but the chasm of their birth denies them marriage. Beatrice is forced into a marriage of convenience by her father to a much older nobleman. It seems that all is lost for the two star-crossed lovers. Philip joins a band of thieves and eventually travels to the Holy Land and mingles with the Moorish populace. Edward, King of England, declares a Crusade. Accompanied by his retainers and his wife and family, he travels to Palestine. Beatrice, now a widow and an orphan by Gareth's murderous hand, once again is forced into marriage, this time with him. She endures his abuse, scorn and neglect with superhuman equanimity. But while in the Holy Land, she discovers a marvellous gift for healing. She and Philip find each other under fantastic circumstances, but this is the Middle Ages, where all things were possible. Taken captive once more by Gareth, she is forced to return to England and her vengeful mother-in-law. It seems all is lost...but is it?

This richly detailed story is an easy read. The setting has been well researched and drawn with skill. The secondary characters are well-drawn, although they don't have great depth. Nevertheless they weave into the fabric of the story and move it forward. While it may be tempting to wonder why Beatrice doesn't just jump onto her horse and ride off into the desert sunset with Philip, the author weaves a cohesive web of social expectations around her that hold her prisoner. The Modern Mind might balk at Beatrice's pliancy and urge her to "put the pedal to the metal," but that option was not open to a 13th Century woman. If that premise can be accepted by the reader, it will be possible to understand the reasons behind everyone's actions. There is a haunting and enduring love story here, but there is also a higher story, the tale of human destiny working itself out within the framework of a firm belief in a Divine Plan for each one of us. Welcome to the Middle Ages.
If you're in the mood for romance and adventure!  May 16, 2006
Two things happened this weekend: first, my daughter and I adopted a new puppy dog, and second, I finished reading Mark of the Cross. Both put a smile on my face and stirred up love in my heart.

Mark of the Cross is the story of a once-in-a-lifetime, endure-through-anything love between Phillip and Beatrice. Set in 13th century Europe, the author fills in the history that era quite nicely-adding to the story rather than distracting in its complexity.

Phillip and Beatrice's romance is complicated from the start. She is a noblewoman; he is the illegitimate son of the neighboring estate. Add to this the accusation of murder and Phillip's banishment from England, their dream of living happily ever evaporates. During this time of turmoil, both Phillip and Beatrice mature as people through their various experiences. Phillip chooses a godless path while Beatrice clings to her faith in God.

Years later, their paths cross again. The outcome of this reunion is completely unexpected, yet satisfying. True love takes many forms. I am smiling again as I remember the ending.

Armchair Interviews says: Read this book if and when you are in the mood for romance and adventure.
