Overview
Highly recommended for parish leaders and staffs, DREs, catechists, RCIA teams, and all parish ministers. Also ideal for college students as an introductory ecclesiology text, The Many Marks of the Church encourages reflection on the responsibilities of "being church" in the third millennium. One, holy, catholic and apostolic: these marks have distinguished orthodox Christianity since the fifth century. Today, however, the Church is known by many other characteristics; e.g., it is prayerful, intellectual, catechetical, biblical, ecological, and sacramental. In this timely book, William Madges and Michael Daley invite over forty authors and theologians to reflect on both the traditional and contemporary marks of the Church. Contributors include: Dianne Bergant, Mary C. Boys, Cardinal Avery Dulles, Robert Ellsberg, Thomas Groome, Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton, and Monika K. Hellwig. Highly recommended for parish leaders and staffs, DREs, catechists, and all parish ministers. Michael J. Daley teaches religion at St. Xavier high School in cincinnati, Ohio. he is a widely-published writer whose articles have appeared in U.S. Catholic, St. Anthony Messenger, RTJ: The Magazine for Catechist Formation, the National Catholic Reporter, and Momentum, among other publications. WilliaM Madges is the dean of the college of arts & Sciences at St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the author or editor of several books dealing with the history of the church and theology in the modern world. Along with Michael J. Daley, he is the co-editor of Vatican II: Forty Personal Stories (Twenty-Third Publications).

Publishers Description
This is a refreshing and contemporary take on what makes the Catholic Church Catholic. What ?marks? it as such? In addition to the four traditional ?marks?: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, Madges and Daley recognize many more. Thus they invited over forty authors and theologians to reflect on additional and contemporary ?marks? such as catechetical, biblical, ecological, charismatic, prayerful, intellectual, and sacramental. Authors include: Diane Bergant, Mary C. Boys, Cardinal Avery Dulles, Robert Ellsberg, Thomas Groome, Thomas J. Gumbleton, and Monika K. Hellwig. Highly recommended for parish leaders and staffs, DREs, catechists, and all parish ministers.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
IN A CONSENSUS ON CHARACTERISTICS OF OUR ONE HOLY APOSTOLIC, CATHOLIC CHURCH GREAT AMERICAN CATHOLIC VOICES REJOICE AND REJOIN  Dec 10, 2007
In order to understand correctly the academic title of this excellent work which so well broadens our limited perceptions of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, ("My Father's House" to quote Our Lord Jesus the Christ, "holds many mansions!") we do well to learn the jargon of contemporary cultural anthropologists, setting aside for the nonce the debate over whether there can truly be such an entity or area of study as cultural anthropology. What is after all, culture, and how do we demarcate, freeze and box something which is so dynamic?

The meaning of the title therefore of this compilation of essays on the North American, notably English speaking (overlooking here the French faction to the North and prolific Spanish speaking Church to the South, which bear other linguistic markers), facet of the great diamond which is the Roman Catholic Church grows more clear as it considers this Church in terms of a phenomenon of cultural anthropology, and thus presents several of its distinguishing cultural markers. What marks this Church in particular as distinguishable from other Cultural Phenomenon? This is a question of great import at the current moment of Church History as Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI seeks to restore fully visibly to the whole world that which most distinguishes and sets apart our universal Church.

In order to define this set of "marks" for us, the editors gather a wide variety of authoritative and most often academic Catholic voices from its anglo-American observance. We find very convenient therefore this compilation in one volume of such a wide spectrum of scholarly perspectives joining in one chorus.

This chorus thus makes of this one book a valuable addition to any Catholic reference shelf, as herein we may easily find some of the strongest voices in the American Catholic Church. The this site product page editorial submits to poetic license, nevertheless, in writing that the editors "invited over forty authors and theologians to reflect on additional and contemporary 'marks' such as catechetical, biblical, ecological, charismatic, prayerful, intellectual, and sacramental" as some of the invited, such as the wonderful Professor of Catholic Theology Monika Hellwig (author of Jesus: The Compassion of God (Theology and Life Series, V. 9.)and Eucharist and the Hunger of the World, etc.) are unfortunately not currently active, with essays published posthumously.

An example of one authoritative voice we welcome here is the great Cardinal Avery Dulles, scholarly theologian of the infamous political brothers, who is also the author ofAPOLOGETICS AND THE BIBLICAL CHRIST and A History of Apologetics, along with numerous other academic and orthodox works, including for the Woodstock Institute.

We also may read here Detroit's great Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, who famously and with great orthodoxy in his role as a member of our Church's prophetic teaching magisterium, preaches: "War is always a defeat for humanity." Although most often read in the pages of Catholic journalism and the forewords to fine works on Catholic social and moral theology for peace and justice, Bishop Gumbleton rarely is found as in this present volume in his own "write." We thus even more gratefully receive this important book as essential reading for all striving to practice the integral Catholic Faith understanding all of its marks here in these United States.

The product page editorial description here is correct in determining this major work: "Highly recommended for parish leaders and staffs, DREs, catechists, and all parish ministers." Although I am now none of these but lector, I find it personally a source of great comfort, companionship, compassion, consolation and strength, a light unto my path and room in which to breath more easily and fully the Holy Spirit of Our integral and Catholic Faith.

Marks and fads  Nov 28, 2007
At a time when most Catholics would probably have difficulty identifying the Church's "standard" four marks, editors Madges and Daley suggest we need even more. And by and large the additional marks offered by the contributors aren't so much "of the Church" but of postconciliar fads, as most (but not all) of these contributors, e.g., Charles Curran, flourished in the culture of dissent that reached its Waterloo two decades ago.
