Item Description...
Will Brannon, the eldest son of a farming family in Culpeper County, Virginia, enlists in the Confederate army after Virginia secedes from the Union

Publishers Description
Manassas is the first book in a series of historical novels spanning the Civil War. The Brannon family of Culpeper County, Virginia - Abigail, a widow, and her four sons (Will, Mac, Titus, and Henry) and daughter (Cordelia) - work a good-sized, self-sufficient farm. The Brannons do not own slaves, but they are staunch supporters of the South in the conflict that is about to turn into war. Manassas centres around the lives of the Brannons in the winter and spring of 1861. As speculation grows that the North and South will soon be at war with each other, the Brannons have their own problems, not the least of which is the Fogarty clan, a large family of troublemakers in the area. Will Brannon is the county sheriff and kills one of the Fogartys while trying to arrest him for murder. Justifiable homicide or not, the Fogartys vow to avenge the loss of one of their own. While tensions mount in Culpeper County, news of Fort Sumter arrives. Will and two of his brothers join one of the Virginia militia units that quickly form. After a short period of training, the Brannons' unit is rushed to defend the village of Manassas, a strategic railroad junction. When Union and Confederate armies engage in battle among the hillsides surrounding small, meandering Bull Run Creek, Will is forced to defend himself not only from the Union troops but also from the Fogarty brothers, who decide that the chaos of battle provides ideal circumstances for settling their score with him.

Battle of Manassas  May 8, 2008
This is the first book in a Civil War series with the Brannon Family of Culpepper county Virginia. The Brannon family of six children is loyal to the South. Will the oldest is Sheriff and he kills Joe Fogarty an outlaw. He leaves the area to protect his family and joins the Confederate army. In the battle of Manassas he must face the Union army and another enemy with the name of Forgarty. This book will make you look for the next book of the series. Manassas (The Civil War Battle Series Book 1)  Apr 27, 2008
To me the book was a complete disappointment. Maybe I expected too much. I didn't realize when I purchased the book that it was a novel. The book is 336 pages long and the only part about the Battle of Manassa was in the last 30 pages. I was interested in some historical background on the Battle of Manassas and not the dealings of a southern farming family.
Sort of Conflicted  Nov 24, 2007
Part of me likes this story and another part isn't very impressed. What other readers have been saying is at least partially true. The Civil War is a very rich period to write historical fiction on, and the author seems to stumble and doesn't handle this task so gracefully. The characters aren't particularly deep and it reads a bit more like a Western than a Civil War story. But, I'm not so quick to dismiss the story. It is compelling in its own way. The flow and character of the story commend themselves to me in a way that I refuse to give this anything lower than three stars.
Manassas (Civil War Battle Series/James Reasoner, Bk 1)  Jan 11, 2007
Excellent book! Outstanding story; hooks you in the first five pages and never lets you go. So well written that I feel I personally know the Brannon family. The historical facts are correct and the way the Brannon's lives are incorporated into the events is great. Well organized and well written. After reading this book, I just had to read the other nine books in the series. A must read for Civil war buffs.
One Family's Travails During the Civil War  May 7, 2003
MANASSAS, the first volume in James Reasoner's The Civil War Battle Series, introduces us to the Brannons, a farming family from Culpepper, VA. The family consists of the widowed matriarch, Abigail, her five sons, Will, Mac, Cory, Titus, and Henry, and her daughter, Cordelia.

MANASSAS is more of a prelude to the War, setting the stage for troubles to come. As county sheriff, Will Brannon, the eldest, has to deal with the trouble-making Fogarty clan. His problems with the Fogartys will follow him into battle at Manassas, as the war begins.

The book is fast-paced and well-researched. This is a novel, and, as such, will not necessarily please those historical purists who insist on complete accuracy. However, the story is gripping, and the violence sometimes graphic. For anyone interested in the time period, or the War itself, this is very entertaining reading.
