Reviews - What do our customers think?
Contains Numerous Errors & Poor Scholarship  Jul 13, 2005
The section of Shawchuck and Heuser titled "The Three Keys to Quality and Kaizen" (pages 348-352) is an example of how these two authors consistently take great ideas and make those ideas untenable. Quality and an attitude of continuous improvement really strikes an accord with me since this is an attitude that I at least attempt to foster within myself. The authors take these great ideas and basically mistreat them and make themselves look like they do not know what they are doing. Simple mistakes in quality of this section betray the fact that these critical ideas have no place in the hearts of the authors.

The authors background regarding the concepts are great examples of how spirit is the key element in making quality and kaisen happen. My own experience matches the advice of the authors that this comes from a spirit that starts at the top with the managers and leaders of the organization. The idea of incremental change is also one that I have seen up close and see the value in this. This is because, as the authors cite, many people are too entrenched in their current thinking to get "out of the box" and into a paradigm of quality.

This said, however, it becomes rather apparent that the authors words are hypocritical. On page 351, the authors say "Like Dantes Faust, they have sold out to preservation, playing it safe in ailing traditions." First of all, Faust was written by Goethe, NOT Dante. Second, selling out for preservation is not a theme that is actually reflected in the play. The authors are off base on two points here. An editor should have caught this and the authors should never have used this example if, as is apparent, they did not really understand the play.

It is this sort of lack of attention to quality that mars what the authors are trying to say. In addition, they seem to ramble on through the section without saying much. It seems that this four page section could have been tightened up into two pages and been far more clear for readers. Once again, the authors have taken a valuable point and watered it down. What could be a good book with points well needed within the Christian Church is marred by faulty scholarship and incoherent meanderings of thought.

A Systems Perspective on Ministry  Jul 6, 1998
All of the prevailing management theories are built around systems theory. Shawchuck does an excellent job of helping us understand ministry through a systems perspective. The book is spiritually sensitive and practically helpful.
