Pope Pius XII: A Man of Peace, Class, Distinction, Compassion, Knowledge, and Rare Moral Courage  Nov 19, 2008
"Nothing is lost by peace;all can be lost be lost through war." (August 24, 1939). This quote begins another good book by Sister Margherita Marchione, Ph. D. This small book is yet a another spirted defense of a great man (Pope Pius XII:1876-1958). The book undermines recent attempts to smear Pope Pius XII. These attempts to smear Pope Pius XII are based on Catholic bashing, prejudiced opinion and so much "hot air."

Sister Marchione begins this book with a summary of Eugenio Pacelli's (the future Pope Pius XII)life. She documented his early academic attainments and knowledge. One interesting anecdote is Pacelli's close friendship with a Jewish man named Guido Mendes whom Pope Pius XII helped to escape from Italy when the Mussolini government tried to have Jews barred from professional life and economic participation. This incident alone undermines the nonsense that Pope Pius XII was hostile to Jewish people.

Sister Marchione also wrote about Pope Pius XII's learning. He intelligently discussed the medical value of penicillin with Sir Alexander Fleming ( 1881-1955)who discovered penicillin. Sister Marchione has another anecdote re conversations between Guliemo Marconi(1874-1937) and Pope Pius XII concerning radio waves and wireless radio transmissions.

Yet, Pope Pius XII was equally comfortable with the less well known. He was gracious toward the poor and even those who were not Catholic. He impressed non-Catholics with his calm graciousness and even disarmed those who were hostile toward Catholicism. His compassion was such that a Baptist family living in Kansas sent $22 a month to the Vatican (their monthly tithe)in gratitude for the efforts of Pope Pius XII and Catholic religious in locating and helping Kansas family's son who was a POW.

The biased nonsense that somehow Pope Pius XII was sympathetic to the Hitler regime is exploded in this book. Readers should know that as early as 1926 when Pope Pius XII was a Vatican diplomat in Germany, the future Pope Pius XII warned of the dangers of Hitler and National Socialism. When Pope Pius XII was elected Pope in 1939, the German authorities called him the Jewish Pope and later called him the leader of Jewish war criminals. Hitler & co. hated Pope Pius XII so much that they planned to invade the Vatican, massacre the Curia and possibly Pope Pius XII and move the Papacy to Lichenstein. Pope Pius was well aware of this plot which is well documented in Dan Kurzman's book titled A SPECIAL MISSION: HITLER'S SECRET PLOT TO SEIZE THE VATICAN AND KIDNAP POPE PIUS XII.

Sister Marchione further documents Pope Pius XII's condemnation of the Hitler regime with irrefutable anecdotes. In 1934, before Eugenio Pacelli was Pope Pius XII, he condemned the Hitler government in clear language published in the Vatican newspaper titled LA OSSERVATORE. In 1935 Eugenio Pacelli, again the future Pope Pius XII, referred to Hitler regime as "False prophets with the pride of Lucifer." In 1937, Pacelli wrote a piece titled 'MIT BRENNANDER SORGE" which was a scathing denounciation of the German authorities.

Sister Marchione further documented Pope Pius XII's rare courage and compassion during W.W. II. Knowing the German plot to invade the Vatican, Pope Pius ORDERED Italian monestaries and convents to shelter refugees and especially Jewish refugees. Pope Pius XII's residence at Castelgrandolfo was filled with Jewish refugees who were secretly hidden. Pope Pius XII and Catholic religious did all they could to provide kosher food and provide for Jewish holidays and holy days. Readers should note that Pope Pius XII extended his influence to both Western and Eastern Europe for which Jewish leaders in these areas showed gratitude and thanked him.

This book has numerous references of praise and gratitude for Pope Pius XII. On December 1944, THE TIMES lauded Pope Pius XII for his help to European Jews during W.W. II. In 1955, members of the World Jewish Congress donated funds to the Vatican as an expression of thanks to Pope Pius XII's efforts. On April 7, 1944, Rabbi Alexander Safran, Chief Rabbi of Bucharest, Romania, highly praised Pope Pius XII for the Pope's courageous efforts to rescue Romanian Jews during W.W. II. In 1958, THE JEWISH NEWSLETTER also offered praise for Pope Pius XII. Rabbi Israel Zolli, Chief Rabbi of Rome, was so impressed by Pope Pius XII's rare courage and compassion for helping Jews and others that he, Rabbi Zolli, converted to Catholicism and took the name Eugenio in honor of Pope Pius XII.

Another source of Pope Pius XII's tireless efforts to help unfortunate victims, including Jewish people, during W.W. II consists of the ACTES ET DOCUEMTNS DUR SAINTE SIEGE RELATIFS A LAS SECONDE GURRRE MONDIALE (ACTS AND DOCUMENTS CONCERNING THE HOLY SEA DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR)which details Pope Pius XII's efforts to help bring peace and rescue refugees including large numbers of Jewish people. More recent examples of clarifying the record re Pope Pius XII include PAOLA MIELI CORRIERE DELLA SERA which has a well detailed piece published on April 26. 2002.

Pope Pius XII knew the danger he faced during W.W. II. He also knew he was dealing with burearcratic murderes, and his Catholic religious simply outsmarted the German bureaucrats. Pope Pius XII also knew to make angry public denouciations would endanger both his efforts and those of other Catholics to save victims of W.W. II.

This is a small book, but Sister Marchione "made a number of points with exceptional economy of words." The quotes at the end of the book by Pope Pius XII are "food for thought." The notes and citations plus the biblogrphy provide for further investigaion and honest history of this great Pope.

Finally, something must be said of Sister Marchione herself. She is 85, and she is still "Fighting the Good Fight." Catholic bashers avoid her now. What Catholic bashers have to say reflects on their unbridled bias and exposes their ignorance and refusal to look at documents and the record. Sister Marchine books are outstanding sources of an honest assessment of Pope Pius XII who should be appreciated for his courage. This reviewer highly recommends this book.
