Reviews - What do our customers think?
So satisfying  Dec 28, 2009
I'm delighted to have found author Sharon Souza. She weaves a great story and creates phrases that take my breath away. I very much enjoyed her first novel, Every Good and Perfect Gift. In Lying on Sunday we journey with Abby as she walks though an ultimate betrayal while balancing her emotions to keep her daughters from knowing what kind of man their father really was. Souza creates believable characters and puts them into interesting situations. What more could you want in fiction?
I Liked The Story (3.5)  Oct 26, 2009
Abigail (Abbie) Torrington had a husband, but he died in another woman's bed and if that wasn't enough news to handle, Abigail receives divorce papers on the very day she finds out about her husbands infidelity. Abigail has a mother who is very critical of her every move, a daughter, Bailey, who treats her as if she's the child (this girl was so disrespectful to her mother) and another daughter, Becca, who shows her the respect she deserves. Abigail also has a best friend she can count on when she needs advice or someone to just listen, and that's Shawlie. And she has a good relationship with her father. But how does Abigail feel about herself? Especially after finding out about her husband's affair?
When I read what this book was about I expected a story focusing mainly on the wife and the other woman. The whole 'who is she' thing - hunting her down, finding her, confronting her. That would have been some serious drama!
This story wasn't about the other woman as much as it was about how Abigail dealt with the shocking news and the changes she made. Lying on Sunday allows the reader to journey through the life of Abigail Torrington and watch her grow from an insecure woman who was controlled by her husband to a woman courageous enough to make her own choices. And, because Abigail keeps thinking back about things that happened when her husband was alive, the reader gets to learn a bit about Robert Andrew Torrington (aka Trey). I read this story some months back; I liked it.
Excellent reading, thought-provoking insight  Aug 11, 2009
I thoroughly enjoyed Lying on Sunday - it was one of those books that was very hard to put down from the very first few pages. It was a great testimony to friendship, mother/daughter relationships, and how a woman in her mid-life with a wonderful future ahead of her deals with the inevitable twists and turns of life. I recommend this book to one and all; I am now looking forward to reading additional work by this author!
Very rewarding!  May 2, 2009
Lying on Sunday was our book club's choice for the month of April. It opens with so much tragedy hitting at once, disrupting Abbie's life, you wonder where the story will go from there. It was refreshing to see Abbie - independent woman, mother and friend - find her place. The ladies in our group loved it, but we all agreed the disrespect shown from Abbie's children would not be acceptable at our house:)
Reminiscient of Anita Shreve's The Pilot's Wife  Apr 30, 2009
In a voice and plot reminiscent of Anita Shreve's brilliant The Pilot's Wife, Sharon Souza introduces us to Abbie Torrington, a woman whose life collapses for a second time when her dead husband's divorce papers arrive at her front door.

As Abbie struggles to mask her anger, show appropriate grief, minister to her devastated daughters, and please a stiff, unloving mother, truth collides with lies. The resultant explosion forces Abbie to explore new roles in places where her family doesn't want her to go.

Souza uses clear prose, layered characters, and interesting twists to present grace--and hope--in unexpected places: the novels of a nearly forgotten writer, a quirky realtor best friend, a sympathetic professor, and the pastor from her deceased mother-in-law's church. If you are a mother, or daughter, you will LOVE this book!
