Item Description...
Overview
Presents a selection of works from twelve spiritual poets, including Rumi, St. Teresa of Avila, Rabia, and St. John of the Cross.

Publishers Description
Sacred poetry from twelve mystics and saints, rendered brilliantly by Daniel Ladinsky, beloved interpreter of verses by the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz
In this luminous collection, Daniel Ladinsky--best known for his gifted and bestselling interpretations of the great Sufi poet Hafiz--brings together the timeless work of twelve of the world's finest spiritual writers, six from the East and six from the West. Once again Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating profound and playful renditions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi's joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis's loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir's wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa's sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz--these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all "love poems by God," from writers considered to be "conduits of the divine." A spiritual treasure to cherish always.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Love Poems from God  Feb 28, 2008
"Love poems from God" is a must book to keep by your bedside, and read a poem or two (or more) before sleep. For all ages and faiths, the poetry will make the spirit rise with hope and joy.

Great Gift!  Jan 23, 2008
This is an exhilarating book! It was my favorite gift to give this past Christmas, with a wonderful response. Half the poets are Sufi, and I was unfamiliar with most of them; the other half are Catholic mystics, all of whom I know, but I did not know these poems. I am hoping that a scholar of Catholic mystics might review here and let me know how much of the translation is wishful thinking. The author seemed to reserve that right.

Truly Love from God  Jan 2, 2008
The poems reflect a deep intimacy with the Divine, & the Divine's unconditional, wild, passionate love for us. The many & varied faiths & Masters represented in this book are a delightful experience of the universality of the Divine's relationship with us. It never fails that if I ask prayerfully for a poem to fit whatever state I'm in at the time & open this book randomly, the message given is always full & fruitful.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires a closer walk in the spiritual life.

Sublime Truth  Dec 30, 2007
Such a treasure here ... spiced with a great range of humor. Examples: "God revealed a sublime truth to the world when He sang, `I am made whole by your life. Each soul, each soul completes Me.'" That quote is by Hafiz (c. 1320 - 1389).

And here is a Kabir rendering by Ladinsky that I love: "The fish in the water that is thirsty needs serious professional counseling." Being a practicing psychotherapist for nearly thirty years, I am very inclined to agree with Kabir and Ladinsky. This book at times has been a remarkable counsel to me.

Ladinsky is beautiful, but deceptive  Aug 12, 2007
I've had this book for a couple of years and I used to enjoy it. I would recommend caution to anyone thinking of buying it, though. Daniel Ladinsky has a history of writing his own poetry and selling it as though it were translated material. Many people in the West know the name of the Iranian poet, Hafiz, through Ladinsky. Although Ladinsky has admitted at times that his writings are not translations of Hafiz but are based on his vision of Hafiz, he has continued to market his material as though it were actually authored by that poet. Many people now read Ladinsky and think that they are reading Hafiz. I think Daniel Ladinsky is a dishonest person for doing this.

That said, his work is beautiful. If what I've said doesn't bother you, then don't worry about it. This book is a pleasure to read. If you are interested in Hafiz or any of the other sacred poets whose names are meantioned in this book, then I would be very careful and not trust anything that has Daniel Ladinsky's name on the cover.
