Originally written in a time of conflict, anxiety, war, cruelty, and confusion, Love: A Glimpse of Eternity invites us to see love as the only reality - love as life itself.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
The fine Catholic Publishing House Paraclete Press, which also brings us the recordings of Gregorian Chant from Solesmes, in the year 2006 brought forth this revision and retranslation of Father Ernesto Cardenal's writings, earlier published by both Herder and Herder and by Image Books as To Live is to Love, with official approbation by the Roman Catholic Church, the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur dated 1971, with Leo J. Steady serving as Censor Librorum. Apparently Paraclete properly perceives these words important for us now in our present Faith crisis of peace and of love.

You might discover and compare the earlier translation at this link: To live is to loveamong others and see for yourself which is better, if there be any competition other than pricing. By any interpretation this work is crucial to our times.

Some have said the most substantial part of this book is the preface by Father Thomas Merton, which was clearly not written posthumously to his assassination in 1968 but is drawn from his 1963 New Directions book Emblems of a Season of Fury. In this Preface he examines very comprehensively, very deeply (as always) the essence and nature of the divine Love we worship and must put into action as followers of Jesus Christ.

You could read this preface forever in profound meditation, and never get to the writings of beaming Father Cardenal, and he would be most pleased. This preface must be read from every pulpit, in every monastic refectory, in each Catholic household, as part of daily prayers, to recall us to our primary mission, as our primary message, to reveal our essential meaning, as followers of Jesus Christ. It is well worth the small price of this book.

Father Cardenal was a member of the Cistercian novitiate of which Father Merton was Master. In the multi-volume collection of Father Merton's Letters, we may read the correspondence between these two great Catholic priests and influential, powerful, pensive voices for the peace and Love of Christ.

As one who speaks Spanish, indeed these past twenty years or so more often and well than English, I always get distracted in wrestling with translations, and strive to see the original Spanish which lies beneath. In comparing the two translations, between Herder's and this Paraclete presentation, it feels the Paraclete works to avoid the earlier translation needlessly. As a translator, I find myself too distracted by the technical aspects of translation to find its transparency unto the oringial sense within the text. Nevertheless, I strongly urge you to acquire either version, either by translator Kurt Reinhardt or by the prolific Dinah Livingstone. I shall continue to seek out the original writings of Father Cardenal.

This work by Father Cardenal truly and fully brings us to an epiphany of our role as Catholics in the modern world, and gives us strength for the good work which lies ahead. If you get only one book of spiritual nourishment, try this one and you will not be disappointed. It bears the official Church approbation as noted above, and carries to us the true message of Jesus Christ and His radical commandments and example to Love one another.

The Paraclete version also newly bears chapter headings summarizing each section which some readers might find helpful. Either way you cannot go wrong.

The Paraclete version is also remarkably well printed and bound for today's disposable market, as it is built to last and to serve, a good font, well margined, excellent paper and good, ample hardcover with durable dustjacket.

Forgive me please for not drawing citations here both from the excellent and sacred preface by Father Merton and from the rich spiritual wealth from Father Cardenal's pen, but this would be drawing for you a cup of cool water from a clear stream of living water, and miserly offering it to you to sip. I cannot draw a bright dancing wave from this deep spiritual ocean to give you, without cheating you of what remains.

Please come yourself to this fountainhead and drink deeply of her refreshing everlasting poetic waters.
