Reviews - What do our customers think?
If you want to add guilt, condemnation and legalism to your hearbreak - read this book!   Apr 10, 2006
I had high expectations for this book based on the reviews that you will find elsewhere on this page. Sadly I was supremely disappointed. Overall this book is flawed on so many levels it is difficult to know where to start and end an honest review of it.

- How about a book on heartbreak that glosses over grief and the grieving process? Further, it goes so far as to make this amazing statement, "Feeling sorry for yourself will prolong your misery and hinder your ability to get over the broken relationship." Friend both the Bible and LARGE body and growing body of empirical evidence say the EXACT opposite! In fact, it is widely acknowledged that a major key to healing a broken heart is to indulge in grief in ways that are healthy and restorative.

- How about a book one that includes incredibly incomplete (not to mention guilt inducing) statements like this one, "The most basic cause of spiritual depresssion is living out of harmony with the scripture." Rather, a more complete (as well as clinically and theologically correct) basic cause for depression it would simply be , "loss" - as in the loss of a close, formerly loving relationship for example.

- How about a book that lays millstones of performance based guilt/legalism around the neck of the hurting reader via "nonjudgmental and caring" (tongue firmly in cheek) self-assessments that include questions like, "Sinful Anger - I may not have admitted my desires to God."

Essentially this book is a collection of modern American Evangelical culturalisms and platitudes for those poor Christian souls who thrive on guilt, conviction, condemnation and legalism - and there are, sadly, many of us who do. Jesus had compassion on the brokenhearted - why do we American Evangelicals insist on shooting our wounded? I just don't get it! We can do better than this!

And, thankfully, we have!

I would encourage the reader to consider the resources that John Townsend and Henry Cloud offer (just search on either name or both here on this site [...]) as well as the classic, "Forgiveness Is a Choice: A Step-By-Step Process for Resolving Anger and Restoring Hope (Apa Lifetools)" by Robert D. Enright, PhD. and "When You Can't Say "I Forgive You": Breaking the Bonds of Anger and Hurt" by Grace Ketterman, M.D. and David Hazard. These are resources with a track record of comforting the broken AND facilitating the Lord's healing in their lives.

If these books are not enough then going through the Church Initiative Grief Share Griefshare 1 Leaders Guide 1 Participant Workbook & 14 VHS Tapes [...] and Divorcecare Workbook 2004 [...] programs may be of some value as well.
excellent and helpful book on how to deal with breakups!!!  Sep 8, 2005
I'm so thankful for Lou Priolo and this book, "Losing That Lovin' Feeling" because it had the essential biblical truths I needed to read after a very difficult break-up. The way Lou teaches from the Bible is so clear and practical, yet gentle and sympathetic to someone who's just lost a significant other. I really appreciated the fundamentals that he reminded me of - things such as forgiveness, dealing with bitterness, turning to Christ for all my needs, etc. The truths really cut to my heart and I was definitely encouraged to press on harder as a believer! Also, I appreciated the appendices of the book, which lists ways in which I am being bitter, unforgiving, or unloving. He also lists practical ways to "cut off" the things that hinder you from getting over your ex. The examples in the book are great too, and really helps you to believe that God does not give you more than you can handle, and that other people are struggling with break ups too! I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling over a broken relationship, whether it's with an ex or family/friend, because it outlines the Biblical steps in dealing with heartache!
A Great Book on How to Think Biblically!  Sep 7, 2005
I first purchased this book thinking it would help me in counseling others who had gone through break-ups. Later on, after going through a break up myself, I read the whole book and I can't express how much it helped me! The book showed how scripture is completely sufficient in dealing with all of life's problems, and helped me take the focus off of myself and my own self-pity and instead focus on God and His word, the bible! It was so refreshing to read such a biblically sound book when there is a plethora of worldly philosophy and ideas that can easily creep into a Christian's mind! I really praise God for this book!
Extremely helpful!  May 6, 2005
Are you struggling to get over your past relationship? Do you feel like you can never love again? Are you wondering how a Christian should deal with heartbreak? Well, if you're tired of the "typical" answers that your friends give when you try to tell them how your heart is bleeding and you feel numb all over, pick up this book! A word of caution though - the truth isn't always easy to hear (or read). Priolo doesn't let us off the hook easily, but instead confronts the reader with truths found throughout the Bible. He cautions us against common post-relationship problems - the kinds that are self-destructive and only prolong the pain - such as self-pity and running to things like alcohol, rebound relationships or even excessive eating. Most importantly, though, Priolo points the reader to the only One who can truly heal the pain and fill that infinite void in our souls.
Best Breakup Book Ever   Apr 13, 2005
Losing that Lovin' Feeling is an excellent book whether you are going through a breakup or are just struggling with depression. I really like the format. 31 short chapters that can be read every day for a month is a very practical way of coping with the heartache following any trying event. I read the book after ending a relationship and it helped me keep my focus on God. Every time I would start thinking about "him" I would pull the book out and try to make the time spent dwelling on the past productive. I found it very helpful and have recommended the book to a number of my friends. The biblical focus helped me have confidence that I could rely on God to help me through the difficult ordeal. I highly encourage anyone to read this book and add it to their personal library.
