Item Description...
What does it really mean to use prayer to bring faith to life in various arenas such as the workplace, daily tasks, and the voting booth? Lord, Have Mercy shows you how to move prayer beyond private devotion and engage faithfully with the questions, decisions, policies, and movements that shape your life in society. To help you think and pray about important and often confounding social and political questions, Wolfteich uses stories from around the world to illustrate what prayer might mean and do in difficult situations.

Publishers Description
Praise for Lord, Have Mercy

"Once in a while, I find a book about prayer that does something fresh. Claire E. Wolfteich provokes us to rethink the very nature of prayer and how it reshapes us as she discusses six examples of modern Christians confronting the complexities of social engagement and how to make responsible choices in favor of justice and human reconciliation."
--Philip Sheldrake, professor, department of theology and religion, University of Durham; author, Spaces for the Sacred

"Wolfteich provides carefully researched case studies from suburban Miami to the turmoil of apartheid South Africa, analyzing the relation of prayer to various human purposes. She guides the reader through the ambiguities of each case, giving no easy answers, teaching by asking questions. But on another, more personal level, the book is an ongoing conversation with the author. Her voice comes through again and again--quiet, intelligent, unpretentious--exposing her own vulnerabilities. We have here a book that is both instructive and moving--a rare thing."
--Peter L. Berger, director, Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs, Boston University

"For Wolfteich, Christian spirituality is 'prayerful engagement--humble, not presumptuous; prophetic, not passive; yet always contemplative in the best sense.' This is the best guide I know for helping Christians understand how prayer, in its many forms, is indispensable to social action."
--Kathleen A. Cahalan, associate professor, practical theology, Saint John's University School of Theology and Seminary

help for the elusive quest for justice meaning and advocacy...  Jan 13, 2008
Jan. 13/08: and, Baptism of Jesus Sunday in church lectionary year

I look for compelling reflections on the justice theme, and how such aches for sharing; as my own faith denomination, sadly, retreats from such! Clarie Wolfteich's "Lord, Have Mercy: praying for justice with conviction and humility"[ via "The Practices of Faith" series, c/o Jossey-Bass, 2006 ] is such a compelling work. The sub-title summarizes well. The vivid, though anguished, case studies serve well. The modest yet forthright convictions, hunches, clues, and shareable affirmations assist well. As a spiritual director and teacher of such, Claire ablely takes the mere "contemplation and action" tension -- often put out there as commendable but seldom well illustrated -- to fresh depths and widths. I long for more, from her and others in the contemplation and social justice field arenas. Meanwhile, I too sense that justice on its own, as integral and central a Biblical, church history and social ethical theme as it remains, is not sufficient. Surely, prayer and hope also ache to be included, so that a dynamic, conjunctive triad assists us?!
Mind me, Claire also helps here, too. To cite but one among many a passage, thus: "[ evoking a social activists' cavaet that "prayer is a reminder of hope'] "Prayer, even,is a kind of humble pause in the midst of even terribly important work, putting our human efforts in perspective, helping to sustain the spirit and endurance of those working for social transformation",p.8. Prayer also, though, is surely and sorely a subversive act ( Barth )and clarion call for intercessory undergirding, oft groaning, from the Holy One.
Clear and careful writing here, and throughout. Again, while thankfully Professor Wolfteich is not alone -- thinking also of Jan Vannard and Glen Stassen's recent works on the peace-and-justice theme, with prayer implicit -- I ache for more, and pray it be so....
