Item Description...
Ever notice the career section of your favorite bookstore? There must be a lot of discontented people in the workforce these days. Are you one of them? If you've ever daydreamed about alternate paths or wondered how you can find peace in today's rat race, this book is for you. You can find your true calling where God's grace and the daily grind meet. Many of us follow a seemingly arbitrary and rushed path to a paycheck. Once you're out of school, whether it's high school or college, you're expected to go to work. You work hard to pay your dues . . . then, one day, you feel stuck. You feel restless and like a mercenary: the "it's-just-a-job" mentality. Soon, these feelings of alienation and cynicism spill over into the rest of your life. Clapper goes beyond the usual career counseling formula in Living Your Heart's Desire. He explains why it's more helpful to understand the theology behind work, calling, and human freedom. You'll discover a variety of visions of what it means for you to lead a life of Christian faithfulness in all realms of existence. "We must ask if the life we are living is a worthy expression of gratitude for what God has done for us," Clapper writes. "Our most important response is the shape of our entire life. It is, in short, our vocation." Easy to read and relevant to today's economy and world (with many references and lessons from movies), this book can help you lead a more fulfilled, rewarding, and joyful Christian life - regardless of how you earn a paycheck. Learn to see your "Office Space"-like world as a Spirit-filled and vital calling in Christ. Take comfort in knowing that God has a plan for your life. Revel in it. Idea: This book makes a great graduation gift! Or a thoughtful gift to a friend who's been downsized.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
clappers book  Oct 11, 2007
After having to read this for one of Dr. Clapper's classes I say it is a very good and helpful book. Within it Dr. Clapper not only takes you through his journey, but also gives you steps to help you on yours.
Discerning one's vocational call  Jul 5, 2007
Greg Clapper's book offers an effective guide to discerning one's vocational path in the lgiht of God's invitational call to life-giving work and service in the world. Creative use of film imagery and metaphor gives the reader many imaginative ways to look at the topics of freedom and obedience, living and working from the heart, fulfillment in vocational life and more. At the end of each chapter, well packed questions for pondering alone or reflection in small group settings makes this book acessible and useful for all those seeking to find, in the words of Frederick Beuchner, "...the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."
Theololgical Reflection  Jan 6, 2006
Augustine's words, "Love God, and do whatever you please," are a marvelous gospel of freedom, though with that sneaky little caveat: "Love God." Greg Clapper's book is a nice theological reflection of how such a life is formed and lived out. The theology is visually presented through the story and imagery of films from about the last 20 years. I think his book is helpful if you're in one of those places of thinking about your life in the context of the bigger scheme of things, and I'd especially recommend it to college-age Christians who are at that stage of fundamental thinking about their lives (which makes sense, given that Clapper is a college professor). The basic anthropology of "Living Your Heart's Desire" is shared also by Augustine: "Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee." Clapper does a nice job of of guidng a contemporary discussion of that.
Vocational Stroll  Sep 30, 2005
Some books provide detailed road maps for discovering your gifts, talents and desires. If you're looking for this format, I would recommend "The Pathfinder" by Nicholas Lore. "Living Your Heart's Desire" goes in the opposite direction, taking you on a philisophical stroll through the concept of God's general will for all Christians. The "call" is to love God and neighbor and your vocation is not so much about career as it is about life as a whole. So if you're seeking practical steps to discerning career fit, avoid this book. If you're in to pondering the call/vocation concept, then perhaps this book might speak to you. I bought the book because, as the title suggests, we might learn how our heart's desires might lead to living out God's specific will for our lives. I struggled to discern where the author was taking this issue. Perhaps it was due to it's highly open-ended philisophical bent. For example, I couldn't put my brain around concepts like this one that he brings up approximately halfway through the book: "Conjunctions of human freedom and God's grace do occur, even if at times these transformative conjunctions seem entirely serendipitous". Perhaps an accurate summary of the author's intent can be summed up in the following quote he provides from Forest Gump, "life is like a box of never know what you're going to get".
