Reviews - What do our customers think?
An excellent guide to Christian Contemplation  Aug 26, 2007
This series is very well done and assembled in a way to use alone or in small group explorations of contemplation and its part in Christian Faith. Merton is the central contributor but others are added to complement and add to his writings. Many will know of Merton but few of the other wonderful writers on the subject like Wilkie Au, John Stevens, Thich Nhat Hanh, Gregory of Nyssa and others. A dialogue and reflection section follows each chapter.

Nourishment for the Soul  May 2, 2007
Living Your Deepest Desires is the third of eight planned volumes in the series Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton. The editors, Merton scholars, open with an overview of the series and suggestions for groups using the material, including guidelines for contemplative dialogue, a process that will enrich discussion of the reflection questions in each lesson. The series encompasses themes of awareness of the true self, a God-centered perspective on life, compassion for others, and unity with all creation. Passages from Merton's works are presented with an opening psalm, an introduction by the editors, and a companion piece by another author.

This volume addresses our identify in God, contemplative living as continuous inner renewal, contemplative prayer, contemplative living and community, the struggle to live contemplatively, the spiritual discipline of solitude, purity of heart, and finding our heart's deepest desires.

Like the first two volumes, Living Your Deepest Desires offers a sample of Merton's wide range of expression. The editors draw from his New Seeds of Contemplation for this comment on contemplation in community: "When the love of God is in me, God is able to love you through me and you are able to love God through me... His love is expressed in two more ways in which it would not otherwise be expressed." A concept that begs for extended reflection. On the other hand, we could immediately adopt Merton's suggestions for praying contemplatively appearing in the third session, taken from The Climate of Monastic Prayer. For the desert fathers, prayer was not a matter of "looking for extraordinary experiences," Merton reports, but of simple evocations as "Lord come to my aid," and continual repetition of phrases from the psalms the fathers had memorized.

The booklets in this series are inexpensive, easy to use, and filled with spiritual food that should sustain any group for a long time to come.
